Mommy there is a snake in my room

Okay - so I decided to have Lifeguard (LG) over for dinner last night with DS here. LG wanted to take us out to dinner - but DS doesn't like to go out for dinner - he even prefers my home made pizza to Dominoes - I guess that is the luck I get with being fancy on my feet in the kitchen. And so I made all of DS's favorite things - salad, pizza and macaroni and cheese. And I also made a Mediterranean lamb stew because I found lamb on sale and I remembered it from my class that I took at my cooking school. That way we had a buffet with lots of good choices and leftovers for me for lunch today, too.

At first DS said he wanted to swim in the pool with us and the dogs. Then he said that since LG is coming over a little later he is going to stay outside and play with his friends more. He comes in and just before dinner is ready, starts a round of games on the xbox - and then insists on eating dinner in his room because he is in the middle of a game and the points are huge and he is about to go up another level - okay - whatever. So I do let him get away with that - I think he is being a bit shy and LG says no big deal - and if truth be told, when I have big work projects it is not uncommon for me to eat at the computer and DS to eat at his xbox - but not all the time.

Then DS comes out and says mommy that is the best dinner ever and he sits and watches TV with us and eats cookies with us and tells us a bit about his day and he is wrestling with the dogs.

Then he goes back in his room and after a few minutes yells, MOM - HURRY - there is one of those long thin black creatures you don't like in my room!! There is a snake in my room! HURRY!

So, me being afraid of snakes sends LG into his room!! I mean I am not going NEAR a snake!! And then I hear the two of them talking.

Turns out DS did that to be funny - his fan chain was broken so he had LG fixing it for him. I go in there to see what happened and laugh and those two are laughing. And the light chain gets fixed.

I come back out to the family room and POOF - the cookies disappeared. Apparently the dogs wasted no time on that matter - a plate full of home made cookies - and all humans busy in the other room. CHOMP! LOL!!

So I guess that went okay. DS says he likes him but he does not want to sit for hours and hours and talk to us - he wants to get to play MORE since I have someone to talk to. Kids are so funny!! They always look for "what is in it for me?"

I was happy that LG is patient and laid back - not pushing himself on DS - but helping him when asked and not questioning our routine or what I do. And so far he will be in our lives probably once a week and we will leave the interaction up to DS to set the pace.

That sounds like a nice time. How old is DS?

Sounds like he wanted a little 1 to 1 with LG, not bad...

Good luck!

It sounds like a good time- and I like that LG is willing to spend time with Nicolas but not pushing his presence on him.

Very nice that LG fixed the fan chain, and found the humor in the situation.

Keep us posted!

Moody, not afraid of snakes but unwilling to deal with rodents of any type

Good that S saw the humour in that one!

DS is 11 and very much in the throes of middle school - he is starting to be in that awkward preteen stage just a little bit. I think on one hand he is worried because of what happened with his dad's last dating escapade (where dad and date went full throttle and spent every day together and pushed her kid on my DS and DS lost his special dad/son time and had to go to all these family events with them and hated all of it) - so I have kept a dialog going and told him this is not the same because the people are all different and the circumstances will be different.

DS says he does not want his schedule to be inconvenienced and I can respect that. AND I think he is curious about LG and wants him to himself and wants to show off. And DS wants to be mischievous, too. He was threatening to tell me he has a test he forgot to study for and that he was going to send a wet dog in the house on us and stuff like that, all very cute and little rascal - like.

The thing is that it is a new change for him. I think DS is going to warm up soon enough - but there is no pushing it.

I would suppose that the light chain on the floor COULD look like a snake. But we also had a snake in the pool recently. And DS knows I am afraid of them and he was wanting to be a bit of a rascal.

Interesting that your DS joked that it was a snake. Very archetypal, very Freudian especially in the context of bringing this new man into your house to meet him.

Oh no - you guys are getting silly on me. ;-)

Actually, I asked him why he decided to say there was a snake. He said he was going to tell me there was a frog in his room - but then he remembered how much I was afraid of the snake in the pool and that it would be a whole lot more fun to say snake and freak me out - he was hoping I would scream. And we just had a good laugh when we remembered the story about the vacuum cleaner that came of the garage and when DS turned it on there was a whole load of toads that came out and ran around the house and I was screaming at him to catch them and take them out!!

I think he has been watching too much Dennis the Menace and Home Alone stuff with this mischief - but it is all in fun, really.

The most hilarious story to me is when his dad was dating the girl with the younger boy - and they had a sleepover for the 4 of them and the kids pretty much stayed up all night. The young boy wanted his mom in the morning and woke up my son. They went to the guest room - mom is not there. So then they went to DS's dad's room - and behold, the door is open and the 2 adults are in bed. Lovely, I know. BUT my son was the most crafty one - he took the little boy back to his room and they dressed up ISPY style complete with nerf guns - and went back to the dad's room - and shot the adults in the head with the nerf guns. Dad and GF woke with quite a surprised start!! *DUH* *BUDDY* - you could at least lock the door or "PRETEND" she slept in the guest room!!!!! OMG!!

While most would be appalled at the lack of morals involved, I was laughing out loud because I thought my son was so mischievous and clever and funny and crafty. And who could argue with the thought of having their ex hit in the head under conditions like that? ;-)
