I just had the cutest detective at my door and I totally blew it!!!!!!!!!!!

We have had some trouble on our street with some of the bad boys who got ahold of a toy beebee gun. One kid shot the neighbor's car and another threatened the same neighbor's kid with the gun. This parent got irrate and called the police and is pressing charges. My son is a witness.

We had a nice detective come to the house to talk to my son. And it just so happens that my son's room is all over the house because I am replacing the floors. So, MrDetective gets to see all of his awards on DS's desk because it is in the family room . And he comments on how impressed he is with DS's awards and sports photos.

Of course yours truly is more worried about the street drama because I don't want to see kids on our street playing with guns and the upset neighbor is here and it is a big story and drama. They get DS's side of the story. It is a drama because one of the kids who did a bad thing is in our carpool.

Okay - so yesterday the detective comes and he is in his plain clothes. His eyes sparkle and mine sparkle back. We have to go through the house to get outside to the pool and he is behind me. Wouldn't you know I am so lucky as to be wearing my tiny running shorts and a race teeshirt and have never been this fit - so that is really lucky for me. He asks me how my training is going and explains he is a runner. We sit on my patio and talk and talk. And there is a sparkle!!

So then he has to talk to DS out in his car to get a recorded statement. Says basically that he has sorted it out. The kid who shot the car gets arrested. And the others get a lecture and he took away all of the guns.

AND THAT WAS IT. I am such a dope to not mention I was single. I mean, if he sees me with a kid in a house he is going to think I have someone? I remember in an earlier conversation talking and him alluding to the fact that he was single. He is the same age, likes to run and has a dog just like mine.

So now what do I do? I was thinking of telling the neighbor who talks to him a lot (his car got shot) to mention that as a single mom I really appreciate the way he talked to my son and taught him such a lesson. And then the ball would be in his court.

If nothing else it is a fun encouragement to me and a lesson to make sure I tell someone I am single. But with all the drama on the street and me worrying about my own DS being a witness I was a bit preoccupied.

Had to chime in on the gun thing. My 8 year old has a bb gun. He's shot several other kinds of guns. It's a tradition here, and in my town, I bet that EVERY kid knows how to shoot one. We use them for hunting (well, not ME, but nearly everyone else) and the kids are taught gun safety from the womb. No kidding.

That being said, my child is NEVER allowed to have it without an adult present, but he also would NEVER shoot at a car, point at a person, or act negligent in any way. Keeping it under lock and key is really more of a safeguard than a necessity.

I think it's simply a way of life thing- none of the kids around here have cell phones until they're 12 or 14, but they all know how to shoot guns. Maybe comes from living in the sticks where cell reception is awful anyhow, yet the hunting is terrific.

Moody, enjoying the fact that her kids are "country" kids
