Somehow our house is just ready for a dog. I found one that is big and fluffy and doesn't shed and is supposed to be really trainable. My son loves dogs and has wanted one for a long time. So I got a wild hair and ordered it!!
Right now it is only a week old so we have to wait a bit. With any luck it will be here in time for Xmas.
I figured this would be good to give me and DS a common activity - lots to do and learn together. It will keep me skinny and walking. Take me to new places to meet more people. Bring DS and I joy and teach DS responsibility.
My other news is that I am going away next week for a cooking class. I really am hesistant about going since so much is going on around here with hurricane cleanup - but it was planned and paid for a while back so I will go. It will help me a lot for my job and just be great for me to get away and learn so many new things.
I will have limited internet access but will be on nearly every day. And Alison will take great care, too.

That's great about the puppy!
What kind of dog are you getting? I like the idea of a dog that doesn't shed. I was seriously thinking of getting a dog. But, I might wait a year or two.
I asked my DS (who is almost 7) if he wanted to get a dog. I thought he would jump at the chance. He said, "No, I'm not ready for one." I asked him why not and he said he couldn't take care of one. I was dying laughing on the inside to hear such an honest, and grown-up admission.
Your 7 year old is ADORABLE!! How sweet! He must have high standards of care.
I am getting a "doodle" - that is a combination between a golden retriever and a standard poodle. They were developed to be search and rescue dogs and guide dogs because they are smart, highly trainable and don't shed. The concept of hybrids has really taken off and you can also find labradoodles that are part labrador and part poodle.
With a home office I need a mellow dog too and it seems that these also fit the bill for that.
I am reading books on how to train a puppy - they are very good and I am learning a lot. I definitely have a lot of confidence now that we will have a winner.
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW ADDITION.
Dogs are so wonderful! All they ask of you is food and some lovin! I have two pugs and I just love them.
I have been reading about the hybrids. There is also the "schnoodle" schnauzer/poodle. A friend of mine has one and it is so sweet. Also they and a "puggle" beagle/pug. I saw it on the news the other day and they are so cute. Still wouldn't trade my pugs though!
Good luck with the training. I would think you would have it by Christmas. At six weeks puppies are usually weaned. You and you DS will have such fun, but don't be surprised is DS doesn't slack up on the caregiving.
P.S. As far a training just remember, PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE! and CONSISTENCE, CONSISTENCE, CONSISTENCE.
Just had to post an update - I am having so much fun here at my alma mater - haven't been here in over 20 years - but feel like it was just yesterday.
I love my cooking class - I forgot how much I used to love working in a commercial kitchen - love the people, the chaos, the work, the food, the creativity, the gas stoves, the equipment, everything. I surely don't miss the long hours and weekends and holidays and big pressure of being out in the industry - but this is such a retreat for me.
I am getting ready to take a big certification test in December. Am busy running and studying in the morning and taking a class at night.
I think it is so great to get away and do something for me. I am not a single mom with all the worries right now - I am ME ME ME!!
Of course my sister, parents and babysitter have all really come together to make this possible and my son is doing well - so that is good.
Judy,
That cooking class sounds like SOOO much fun!
Oh, how cool!
