I'm wondering if any of you ladies have had any experience with this. My sister had her baby last week (a boy, 8lb 5oz), everything seemed fine until we found out he has low blood sugar. He seems to not be able to regulate it himself. He's been in the NICU since day 2. It doesn't appear to be life threatening since he's in intensive care and they closely monitor him. His sugar levels sky rocket then plummet. They are waiting for insulin tests to come back, but suspect something is wrong with his pancreas (sp?). Has anyone here been through this? It is shaping up like he's probably going to have surgery, but I have no idea what that entails. The docs answer any question my sister asks, but she has to ask, they aren't real forthcoming with information otherwise. I'm curious what the sugery entails, how dangerous is it for him? Obviously I know any surgery for anyone has the potential to be dangerous, but is it more so for a newborn? I'm sick about it, but don't want to show too much of that to her...she needs more than that. She decided to check out of the Ronald McDonald house today and go back home, try to make life as "normal" as possible again. I know she can't stay at the hospital indefinately, but I get so sad thinking of him there alone. Poor little guy. I'd love to hear anything anyone knows about this. Thanks...

There are a few things it can be (I am an L&D RN, but by NO MEANS an expert & w/o more info, I can only guess).

Thank you. I know no one is a medical expert here, and by no means am I asking for medical advice. I am a worry-er by nature anyway, so if I allow it, my mind can race to all sorts of "what if's". The current one being "what if" they say the baby is OK, but he's really not. He is so big and perfect looking, we would have no idea something was going wrong until it is too late. After reading your message, I remember talk of hypoglycemia, and the pancreas maybe is too big, they would take some of it out... but like I said, still waiting for test results. All I can do is pray for him, and visit him as much as I can.
Thanks.
