& whoever else!
Below we were talking about our 40th bdays & I was saying i may go to Greece. For those of you who weren't around when we talked about him, or need a refresher, heres the story about my Greek God. And I will put the link in to the pics of us 17 yrs ago, & then pics of him NOW :) (get out your fans! lol)
Waaaaaaaaaay back in my early 20's, (i live in a naval docking city), Greece sent an entire Naval crew to train on one of our ships that Greece was purchasing. The guys were here from early May - Sept. One nite in May (like their 3rd nite in town), i met this guy Spyros. Spoke so-so English, but i could care less ... he was SO hot. Long story short, he ended up living w/ me almost the entire time they were here in the U.S. It was this torrid love affair. He was the commander of the ship, so he didnt HAVE to be there overnites, just for the crews in the daytime.
I had just started nursing school & he is a career military guy. He was in his mid 20's & had to be in the Greek Navy till he was 40. By the end of his time here, he didnt want to leave & seriously considered defecting - which is what he would have HAD to do to get out of his career choice. But, he is the only son of a Greek widowed woman ... not an option to not go back. Plus, i didnt want to have "that" on my plate, his having left his country & family for me. & he wanted me to move there ... but i didnt want to leave MY family or career. The day he left was THE saddest day. He stayed with me till 5AM that morning, till i brought him back to the ship. We both sobbed ALL NITE LONG. Watching him walk back to the ship was heartbreaking. He kept calling me when they were loading up saying "Rebecca, I cannot go. I cannot leave you". Ugh. So, my friends & I (7 of us) got mimosas & went out to the channel of the bay, where the ship would be leaving through. Talk about TORTURE! Here is the link to the hotel http://www.newportexperience.com/oceancliff.htm - we were on that back lawn, watching as the ship sailed by at 7AM, while we drank mimosas & SOBBED. All of a sudden, we saw this teeny tiny white uniformed guy on the bow (far far away), waving. Aye aye aye. Anyway, he called me from Cuba, where they next docked, & said "I wanted to jump off the ship & swim to you when i saw you at Oceancliff". Then he begged me again, to move to Greece.
That was Sept. We kept in contact all winter, & he flew me to Greece to see him in July. My 2 friends came with me b/c there was always the chance he may get called out to sea. & SURE ENOUGH, 3 days b4 we went to Greece, he was called out! We still planned on going, but i was heartbroken. He said he would do his best to get back to meet up, we had 3 weeks of travelling thru the Greek islands planned. Well ... i got off the plane & THERE HE WAS! It was incredible. We had a whirlwind couple of days in Athens, & were lying in bed in the hotel on day #3 & the phone rang. He had 6 hours to be back on the ship & they were leaving Greece. Talk about heartbroken. We had only THREE days together or 3 weeks! :(
We then sobbed together the next 6 hours. The "parting" was like a movie. My friends were in the cab, waiting for me, while his cab was waiting for him - in the middle of the street in the middle of the city of Athens. We couldnt tear ourselved away. But eventually we had to. I swear, i DO know now what a "broken heart" feels like. I was physically ill b/c by that point, we both knew it couldn't ever work & it would be the last time we saw one another. It had been more than a year, & we couldn't ever figure it out w/o ONE of us giving up their whole lives. So ... we kept in contact another 10 months or so, & then i met my X & got married, & we never talked again. I always wondered & worried about his safety with the wars in the world.
Fast forward to last May, i was now divorced. I was thinking about him & decided to put an ad on Craigs List, missed connections. There you can post looking for someone. Talk about a complete long shot. I put an ad up, in the Athens Greece section - w/o my name - just stating his name & that i knew him in the US, he was in the Greek Navy, etc ... & that was it. Well, 3 months later I got an email, with HIS name in the title & it said "Rebecca, is this you?"
He had Googled his name, 1st time ever, to find a newspaper article that had been done on him. & MY AD came up! Incredible. So ... since then we have spoken on the phone a couple times, but we IM & Email a lot - he has one of the videos where he can talk to me & I can see & hear him. It is SO weird .. his voice, accent, the way he says my name, his mannerisms, ... its ALL the same. & Lord, he has aged WELL! lol He is divorced with a 10 yr old little boy, Thanasis. We have talked about "what could have been". He tells me i was the "love of his life, but it wasn't meant to be". etc. He has said he was never happier than when he was with me. Ugh. We haven't made any plans to actually meet (although HE remembered & reminded me of the promise we made when we were together that in 10 yrs, no matter WHAT, married or not, we would meet in Paris ... of course, we didnt) but have talked about the possibility of seeing eachother again.
I am a little hesitant - b/c nothing really has changed. Neither of us would leave our country & I am a bit afraid of us seeing eachother & falling back in love ... but, hey, I would live! lol
So, thats it. Here are his pics ... back then, & now. & DONT laugh at my hair-do's back them! ;)

Oh R - what an amazing story - thank you for telling it at such length... All I knew from before was hot Greek guy meets hot US lady, they fall in love and it's sad cos they can't be together. The details really brought the whole story to life. What an amazing, moving, happy, sad, bittersweet love story. The romantic in me wants you two to be together. In my little world, he realises that he can't live without you and moves his life to the States to be with you. Then you both live happily ever after, blissfully in love, and making up for all those years and the circumstances tore you apart. (Failing that, you two meet up in Greece and you jump him!!) LOL
I have seen those pictures a couple of times before, but I never get sick of them. The 80s fashion suited you! And oh boy does he get better with the years. Absolutely gorgeous. What a lovely couple you made then, and would make now ;o))
Thank you so much for sharing!
Clem xx
