HELP ME!

I thougt we had names picked out. For a boy, it was supposed to be William Wyatt and for a girl, it was to be Emily Christine.

Now Shane is changing his tune on the boy's name and acts as if he had no idea abut a girl's name even being picked. And he feels left out of that.

He has always said he wants to name a son (if he has one) Wyatt. So we made that happen (if it's a boy). I made sure he'd get his name if this baby is a boy. Since he was so passionate about a boy's name, I let him have that. And I took over a girl's name and used names that meant something to me. Emily for my great-grandmother and Christine for the name I was supposed to have instead of being named Melissa.

Now, Shane is talking about William Augustus and calling him "Gus". I hate it. He's so into western movies and Lonesome Dove is his favorite. But does that mean we have to name a kid after it? I know Robert DuVall is a great actor and Augustus McCrae is his best work ever, but we don't need to name our child after him. I just think he'd be teased. Wyatt is such a great name and now he's torn on what to do. His best friend is here now staying with us and he laughed when I told him the name Shane was changing his mind to. He hated Gus too.

Give me your opinion. William is pretty much set in stone. His father was a William, Shane is a William, so we planned to stick to that. So much goes with William, what other stron masculine names can you come up with that won't get a kid beat up?

I still love William Wyatt. I think that's a FABULOUS name. Don't understand why you ditched it. William Augustus isn't ok, so I would go back to Wyatt. (oh, and BTW, I did go to school with a kid who just barely lived down the name Gus. I would hate naming my kid that!)

William Wesley

Willam Christopher

William Brendan

William Owen

Where is the sticking tongue out icon????

What is it with men and names????? I swear! Tim wanted to name Alex "Eddie Van" - after Eddie Van Halen! And he wasn't letting go of it! I said no way in hades. Then - he suggested Getty - after the lead singer from the band RUSH. Not just no - but HECK NO! ACK! Then, he wanted Elliot, which was his name back when he was a d.j. in Minnesota - all I could think of is E.T. - touching his red finger to Elliot - um, no. We FINALLY agreed on Alex (his name is Alex mainly because that's the ONLY boys' name we could both agree on!) and I chose Christopher for his middle name because I love it. And not Alexander - just Alex. AlexandER ChristophER XXXXXER would have been too much!

Augustus. No. Period. That's horrid. Reminds me of the kid I went to school with, Rudy, but when he had substitutes, it came out his name was Rudolph - and he was teased mercilessly. ACK. Don't give in! It would be one thing if you lived in Greece, Italy or Germany, even, but it just doesn't fly in America!!!!

I love William Wyatt. I'd push for that. I think pretty much every "traditional" male name goes well with William. Christopher, Michael, Joshua, James (oooh, I love William James - but wait - I don't love Jim - they'd have to call him James!)

I like Emily Christine. The only thing I don't like about it is that Emily is in the top 10 most popular American girls' names - and has been for the last 5 years. My niece, Ashley, has been Ashley B. since kindergarten, and still is in the 7th grade, as she has 7 other Ashley's in her class.

I am not considering Wyatt ditched at all. I love it. I think it's a good strong name that he can carry through his whole life. Gus is just not one of those names most people can carry off. In a movie, yeah. But not here in the real world. Shane seemed a bit embarassed when his friend and I laughed together about it. He said he's never had to name a kid before. Well there was a time I was in that situation too, but I thought long and hard about the name and consequenses of being named such things. I can't imagine having to see my son coming home with black eyes because he's defending his name. Poor kid. Celebrities name their children such horrid names and I'd have to legally change it when I was old enough. Of course, they are privately tutored, so no one will make an issue of the name. Shane is gonna have to sit and think a bunch about what that would do to his child. I understand his thinking. A brave character from a movie...a strong southern name. Fine. But movies are not always the best places to find baby names. Your child is not that character. Don't try to immortalize a movie person by naming your kid after it. It's just not the way to go.

Hope he gets that message.

LOL!!! I TOTALLY forgot to say in my last message on this thread. My dad's name is GARY WAYNE.

Gary for Gary Cooper and Wayne for John Wayne. Did his mother have NO imagination at all??? And anyway, why BOTH western movie names????

Yeah, let him have his own identity.

Shane was named after a western movie too. Never sa it, but the character was Shane. Of course, Shane is a wonderful name and most people will not identify it with a movie. But with Augustus????? Yeah, they will either feel like we have no imagination OR we're just plain cruel!

LOL!
