I think it is a way of flirting. Plus if I am not mistaken, if you click on your favorites page you can see who is online now. It is a way of sorting I think. If I liked them I might do the same - add them as a favorite. Just to be fun and see if it encourages a note.
I think the thing about POF is that you have to be online at night - that is when they can see who is online near them and if they like your pic they want to chat.
POF success is definitely a thing about being online because of the way POF shows the people close to you who are online or who have checked email - that gets you to the top of the pile so to speak.
Good luck and keep us posted. Are you on match, too?
Everyone on POF knows that the favorites list means nothing(just read the forums). I am on 2 guys favorites list that I've never had nor will ever have contact with because they live a million miles away. Don't let your favorites number get too large though(You have the option to delete off their list)because many a man has posted on the forums that they won't contact a women with too high a number of favorites because they beleive that she's too popular and won't answer their emails.
I have used Favorites for that reason, i.e. a reminder to send a message when I have more time to write. I also used Favorites as "I'm sorta interested and *think* we're a match but not quite so let me think about it more...." reminder as well.
Nice thing is that after I added this woman as a Favorite, she added me which prompted me to message her. I really did not think she would be interested because of our age differences and what seems to be her passion (enviornmentalism) but I wrote anyway figured she checked out my profile. She responded and now the next step is us actual talking on the phone. We'll see....
I do not pretend that I represent most guys. In fact I read "Self-Made Man: One Woman's Year Disguised as a Man" by Norah Vincent who is a lesbian in order to know what men are about.
I view myself as an anomaly since I am Japanese American geek (father, both brothers and myself have graduate engineering degrees) with a dominant mother, nurturing father - so I'm not the typical macho, agressive, team/spectator sports, always right, vocal type of guy.

Liz- I totally know what you mean!
I thought of two possibilities.

With that said, thanks for the welcome *grin*

"so I'm not the typical macho, agressive, team/spectator sports, always right, vocal type of guy."
... and it's a good thing that you're not- because this world is already full of those types. Plenty of them!!
