QOTW: How soon do you start holiday shop
| Wed, 10-18-2006 - 9:52am |
Question of the week - I saw this on another board and thought it would be interesting to hear what everyone here does with regards to holiday shopping for gifts?
1) Timing: Do you shop all year and pick up stuff on special sales? Shop at the last minute? Start early?
2) Kids: Do you encourage your kids to make a Santa list? Do they still believe in Santa? Or if you don't celebrate Xmas - let us know how you handle picking out gifts for the kids for the other holidays (Hannukah or Kwanzaa or ??)
Tell us!!
About me- I like to get it done early. My son did make a Santa list - and this year I shared it with family so he can get stuff that is useful to him.

I've already started shopping. I find great stuff on sale at most stores that are clearing things out to bring in new stuff for the holidays. Just keep in mind the store's return policy. If you buy too early and your recipient doesn't like it or it doesn't fit they need to be able to return it easily!
My daughter is going to be making her first Santa list this year. Every time she sees something on TV that she just "has to have" it goes on the list. In a few weeks, we'll sit down and write one final list and then distribute it to the grandparents.

Every single year, without fail, I promise myself that next year I'm going to buy throughout the year to avoid the panic and brokeness that befalls me come December. Every single year, come December, usually around the 20th, I'm broke and scrambling to get last minute gifts for everyone. The children think it's loads of fun to visit every mall in three counties, and since Santa inevitably gets to the next mall before we do, it confirms that he is, indeed, magic.
I have come to the conclusion that for me, it just wouldn't be Christmas without the mad dashes to anywhere that's still open at 9pm on December 24th to find that elusive battery/card/box of candy/bottle of wine/singing reindeer... I work better under pressure, I guess.
And, can I just say that the fact that Christmas decorations are literally hanging next to Halloween decorations at the store makes me sick?! Can we please get through one holiday at a time, here, people?! It's no wonder people like me can't get ahead- they keep pushing the holiday prep time up on me!

The kids usually make a Santa list. Droid is at the threshold where he isn't quite sure he still believes. He still wants to, but logic is kicking in, and Santa's handwriting looks an awful lot like mom's. I think I have one more year, but I won't be sorry when they know it's me, since they won't expect me to pull off magical feats, like the elephant The Butterfly wanted last year, or weather warm enough to swim in Droid wanted. Plus, sometimes, they're all secretive about what they want, and will only tell Santa, which makes it difficult for his little helper to actually procur the goods.
I try to help them be more about giving than getting, and we don't do cable anymore, which means they see no advertisements. That's the most wonderful thing about not having cable. NO commercials for stuff kids just gotta have!
Moody- who hasn't even purchased any candy yet, let alone Christmas gifts!
