Back in my single and much wilder days I used to say wine me, dine me, 69 me ... but I have a weird take on romance now. Maybe I have never been seriously romanced! Don't misunderstand me, I like soft silky underwear and lacey frilly -comeandgetme- items but I feel the most romantic when we are bonding.
I feel more romantic if we are doing something constructive together, like building something or repairing something- like a shed or putting on a roof, like a car or a tractor. Seeing my guy all sweaty and dirty, his muscles flexing-mmm- makes me want to wash him head to toe.. know what I mean? LOL After the shower we are getting nitty gritty!
I'm not a flowers type of girl, allergies make sure of that. I like candles but not a bunch of different scents- the allergies again! I do like a nice dinner out but I prefer the local steakhouse or Applebees, or just a wayside bar&grill. Just a place with a good jukebox and cold beer where we can talk and maybe dance a little. I am very visual for being a female. It's not about looks- it's a matter of grace I think. I like to watch the way a man moves, his body language tells me a lot about him. A nice straight walk, squared shoulders and no hands in his pockets. That attracts me :) There is one guy that I work with and he is so confident in everything he does. I love to watch him work because he is so natural in his body movements. He is married and I respect those boundaries but I am human and that is some serious eyecandy :)
Ahhh romance. What's that? Just kidding, but for sure, it's been a long time.
I guess, for me, it honestly just depends. I'm super romantic in the traditional sense- I'm totally charmed by flowers and candlelight, soft music, blah, blah, blah. I say "blah, blah, blah" because if a guy thinks that's all it takes, he's gone. I think romance takes a lot more than acting like a jerk 99% of the time and then bringing home flowers one night to "make up" for it. It's just not gonna cut it.
I also think the absolute most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me is help my kid learn how to ride a bike without training wheels. Android was really struggling, and I was at the end of my rope... I just couldn't figure out how to teach him. The guy I was dating came at it with a different approach, and within days, the kid was ready to jump a jump. Very romantic. Major points.
I guess for me, the answer isn't really an answer. It's a feeling. Does the thought of him make my insides squishy? Do I smile when I hear his voice? Does he surprise me, does he make me laugh, does he make me happy? I'd rather have steady, stable happiness than sporadic, traditional romance any day of the week. And then, there's always lust.
Moody- who's now thinking about romance and happiness in a whole new light
Romance is like perfume, 1000 different scents and each one has a different impact. It can be a look across the room during a party that says 'I'm thinking about you' or it can be a quiet dinner where you are able to share your secret fears and dreams. Both are great. Its the ability to continue to do it over and over without the scents becoming boring that makes for a true and long lasting romance
Romance is a thoughtful gesture. Like when my guy sees that I need a mirror hung and he'll bring over his tools and hang that mirror without me asking him.
Romance to me is the thoughtfulness that comes when a guy is totally plugged into me. He has listened to me and is able to do something for me or buy something for me which is all about me and what I value.
I am totally not interested in flowers unless they are carnations/daisies, which are my favorites. Not interested in the by-the-book romantic dinner, but very interested in a well-planned evening of dinner and dancing and he arranged for the sitter to watch the kids.
There is a book called the "Five Love Languages" or "Five Languages of Love"... never can keep it straight. And it talks about how people express love one of five different ways (acts of service, physical contact, quality time, words of affirmation and receiving gifts). I am definitely a quality time girl. I recommend this book to everyone I know because it helps with all intimate relationship (SO, spouse, children and parents).
Another good book, about developing and maintaining intimacy is The Seven Levels of Intimacy by Matthew Kelly. It talks about how we share and communicate and the different levels of intimacy and their impcts on relationships (non-romantic as well as romantic). Very good book
fivesense couldn't have said it better. Last night, Mike brought his tools over and hung new blinds and curtain rods in my new condo... sitting in my chair watching him, talking to him, and just appreciating his help was "romance"... now, getting it on later on... there was some romance there too;)
Wow - there are great answers here. I have enjoyed reading them all.
I would say that romance is a feeling for sure - that butterfly in the stomach feeling when a guy does something thoughtful and almost silly to let you know he cares.
Really though....romace to me is a little of both. Seeing it is in the eyes in the one I am with, his gestures as well as something I can feel. You can feel the pull of someone, you can feel their lust or love for you.
