I followed the Ladies' Home Journal link given by Wendy and Judy, and found a potentially helpful quiz to determine which dating site is best suited for your needs:

I used several before meeting my SO. Truth is that match.com has the most numbers and if you use your own intuition and screening criteria you will find the most dating opportunities and therefore your best chance of meeting someone you might have chemistry with.

eHarmony doesn't have enough members in most areas. Also the criteria is not as good as they make it out to be.

true.com and truesingles.com are all like Yahoo personals, so don't bother. Better off using myspace.

That is an interesting article. I think some of the niche dating sites may gather better interest and success as time goes on and online dating becomes more mainstream.

Match.com has my vote - I think because it is so so popular and because people do have to make a certain amount of effort and they have to pay and they don't allow chatting that those factors all increase the quality of the applicant.

One thing is for sure - even if you don't get a match you do learn so so so much about dating and people and matching from being on match.com. I learned to screen for religion and the kid issue and the marital status and core values from reading so many profiles. It helps me in so many things besides dating. It was a great learning experience for me.

I also think that participating on eharmony was a great experience - to develop the must have and can't stand list and to learn good questions to ask. Even though that site was a great disappointment because not that many people are willing to fill out all the questions and pay their more expensive fees. I did not feel that my matches on eharmony were any better than the ones on match.com and I think I only had one real date from that site. I screened out many by email and phone.

I found the lhj.com site to be of great interest. Did not see this so I am glad you posted it here.

Interesting... even though I'm not active in OLD right now!

Mine came up with Emode/Tickle first. Which I haven't checked out in forever- so I'm not sure just HOW it is lately.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emode/Tickle

Average Age Range: 18-54
One-Time Membership Fee: None
Monthly Fees: One month, $19.95; three months, $39.95; six months, $59.95

This site, which changed its name recently, has a unique approach to dating: Take tons of personality tests, some serious and scientific, some silly and fun, and post the results along with a profile. You can date someone who would be the same kind of Volkswagen Beetle as you, or you can concentrate on people with a particular IQ -- very specialized! There's also a Friendster-like function, where you can browse your buddies' buddies for friendship or more. At $20 a month (less if you sign up for longer), it ain't cheap. But with this kind of detail, you're sure to find someone interesting.
