I really think you need to reevaluate, Mel. When I read sentences like "And it breaks my heart that he could be missing out on things he really wants because of this house deal." all I can think is that you REALLY need to reevaluate.

My heart never breaks when my kids don't get what they want. I think, as a mom, the most important lesson I can teach them is to dream big, work their butt off, and realize that we don't always get what we want in life.

I agree with Min. I also think that you need to be less concerned about what your ex thinks. I mean really, who CARES what he thinks. I think you need to be more concerned with making this move a great experience for Dylan.

Even if he doesn't get that many gifts, you can make the Santa experience memorable for him at a very low cost. I've been doing this since Christy was 3... leave cookies and milk for Santa and veggies for the reindeer. Take some flour and sprinkle it on the floor to look like snow coming from the fireplace, take a pair of Shanes shoes and make footprints leading to and from the tree. Even if there is only ONE gift under the tree, there will still be excitement!

G:

Thanks for the belated birthday wishes. Everything you said in your post was right on target, and 99% of the time I know it's true. You are right that I do have a lot going for me, and I am thankful for the things that I do have like my kids and my home.
When I get down, I tend to only look at the bad, and not at the good. I had a really sressful day yesterday, and I just needed to vent and get it off my chest. Patience has never been one of my strong suits, and when I get down it's hard to keep the faith. Thanks for all the positive words. You made me feel better.

I am exhausted. Wiped out. Drained.

I've spent 7 days in a "day program" for Tyler's health issues, which also dredges up a lot of emotional issues. I am looking at weeks of therapy for him and for my marriage which is struggling.

I am actually having a good day today. But I don't cry often, and I've cried deep sobbing (but cleansing, I know) tears several days this week. That's always a pretty good indication of just how wore out I am.

It WAS a very productive week, but I am just "woe'ing" over my exhaustion.

Shane and I have both been there with the Ramen Noodles thing. We've both been single and absolutely dirt poor. I saw his tax paperwork for 2002....PITIFUL! He ate those, PB & J, Spam, whatever he could afford. I ate mostly Hamburger helper or something similar but only because I would shop at discount grocery stores and get the meat cheaper and could freeze a bunch of it for later. Otherwise, I'd have to learn to like Spam.

Neither of us mind doing what we have to about groceries. We can get good stuff as long as we pay attention to the sale papers and buy what's marked down. Plus we have those discount cards at all the stores so we can get the discounted price on other things. A good friend works at a grocery store, so she fills me in on what is on sale from week to week.

I know Dylan is going to be alright. He's asking for stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh cards and action figures. Those are all so cheap and he LOVES that stuff. Boys are so easy. The light at the end of the tunnel is that our tax return is projected to be almost $9000 this year. So we plan to pay off some bills so we can live easier. That's going to be awesome!

It's a shame we can't enjoy the money, but hey, we get stuff paid off or at least down, and then we get to enjoy it another year. And live more comfy until then. My vow is not to take on any additional bills. We have all we need.

That's true. And after all, this is Shane's first Christmas to have D here in the morning. YOU BET he will do all he can to make it special. I know it will be exciting. He'll come home Christmas Eve from his father's and have those gifts with him, and then my parents are sending their stuff here for Christmas morning and then our stuff will be here. I plan to just go with the flow. I've been thinking about that today. Yu-Gi-Oh cards and action figures are all he talks about. He has no deck of the cards of his own and he has to share with his step-brothers who rarely let him play. He wants to dual too. I talked to him about that and he looked so sad. He really needs a set for himself. And He loves Dragon Ball Z action figures and Ninja Turtles. Those are no more than 7 bucks a piece most of the time and if a 7 dollar toy makes him smile, hey, I'm all for it! I despise Wally World, but I'm headed there to get Christmas stuff. It's much more reasonable. I'll go later at night when the crowds are easier to manage. Dylan will have a happy day. We'll make sure of it.

You are doing a great job with the financial planning - what a good idea to use tax dollars to pay down more bills. I think it will only get easier after that.

I hope you share pix of your new house!!

That's a great idea! I do have pix of the house as it is now. The owner's stuff is in it. It's the listings pix. I'll post it on a new thread!
