Remember I discussed relocating? Well the new places I added on the list was Seattle, Chicago or Houston. Where can I find info to housing, neighborhoods, etc in Tacoma/Olympia? I am more set with the idea of maybe living their. Any thoughts, or no good? What is a good area around their? I used to live in Seattle and Tacoma and I was really happy their as a child. The thought came back to possibly relocate within my company. What other large companies are their? HOws the job market? HOusing? Neighborhoods not to go and to go? You got the picture I think! LOL!

Well, I live in Seattle :) and I love it here! but I will try to give you a somewhat balanced view as I see it:

Large companies? We've got Microsoft, Starbucks, Boeing, Nintendo, Safeco, University of Washington. Tacoma I'm not very familiar with, but Olympia is the state capitol so there are lots of government and public employment opportunities there. Olympia is about 60 miles south of Seattle. Tacoma's a bit closer.

It's beautiful out here. Lots of variety, outdoor recreation, great sports teams, music scene, museums, theatre, art, & healthcare. Seattle has a good night scene, but meeting people tends to be a bit difficult around here, because we are either working all the time, hooked up on the internet, or drinking our lattes and hiding behind a book or a laptop. :) There are very good looking people in Seattle though and it is a very casual city.

We have terrible traffic congestion, too much legislation, and we are somewhat overpopulated. Housing prices are soaring, but not as bad as our neighbors in California. And Olympia and Tacoma are still reasonable compared to Seattle. There are lots of beautiful Island communities that offer affordable living and beautiful serene scenery, but then you may become a slave to the ferry systems and traffic if you work inland.

Schools are good but under-funded. The WASL (state mandated graduation test) is a piece of crapola...but you won't have to worry about that until your kids are older. Oh, and if you like SUV's, you'll be seeing a lot of them here!

The winters are cold but we rarely have snow in the city (maybe once or twice a year) It does rain a lot in the fall and winter and the days are painfully short. But in the summer it doesn't get dark until after 9pm and we have warm and wonderful weather. And good clean air.

We're called the evergreen state because of all the lush greenery surrounding us and Seattle is the emerald city and it truly does sparkle. It is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen.

Hope this helps :)

Oh if you want to do a city by city comparison of things like cost of living, crime rate, schools etc... a REALLY good website for that is homefair.com. We recommend it to our seasonal relocaters all the time. Here is a link:

Here is a link to my photo album which has one of my absolute favorite photos of Seattle. IT's NOT a postcard, it was actually taken by a friend of mine on a chilly december day.
