I didn't see the article, but here are a few things that are important for a girl to know about "handling" their guy:

1) Lubrication - once he's hard, you need something--lotion, oil, saliva--or it will get irritating fast.  And keep him lubricated.  "Dry spots" may not bother your hand, but it will bother his penis...big time.

2) Anatomy - the vertical ridge on the underside of the head of the penis (the frenum) is by far the most sensitive spot.  The head itself is not.  You can rub the other 90% of the penis all day and he may never ejaculate.  Any masturbation technique has to include the frenum.

3) Position - Remember that he most likely masturbates with his fingers working the underside of his penis (the frenum) in a fist-like grip.  Not too firm, but not too light.  You'll need to experiment.  If you're facing him, your hand will be completely opposite of what he's used to--or wants.  It's better either to sit or lie on either side of him facing away from him, or to straddle him in that same direction so that your hands are in the "correct position".

4) Pacing - Most guys take short breaks to allow the sensitivity to return.  Whatever you do, don't pump away continuously.  He'll lose sensitivity quickly, and it may even hurt!

5) Speed - Slow is usually better than fast.  Porn often shows HJs where the hand is going so fast that it's a blur.  Some guys may like that, but I'd check with the guy first.  When in doubt, go slow.  You probably can't go too slow, but you can go too fast.

6) G Spot - some guys like you to play with their balls or pressing on the perineum (the area between the anus and the scrotum) or to insert a finger into their anus while masturbating them.  Be gentle, but don't be afraid to experiment to find out what he likes.

7) Eye contact - Many guys like eye contact while be masturbated.  It can be a real turn-on.  You can also watch your hand move up and down.  Guys like that, too.  Whatever you do, don't get distracted by anything else other than him and his penis.  Looking away and appearing bored are complete turn-offs. 

8) Playing with yourself - Absolutely!  But always stay more interested in him than yourself until he comes.

9) Teasing - feel free to tease him a little bit as he nears orgasm, but make sure you're in control and that you don't accidentally stop stroking when he starts to come.

10) - Talking Dirty - describe anything you want, or even just talk about what you're doing to him.  If you ask any questions, make sure they only require a "yes" or "no" answer.  Don't force him to think at this point.  This is not a good time to have a conversation.

11) Ejaculation - Typically guys want constant light stimulation when they reach the point of no return, which is 2-3 seconds before they start to shoot.  Don't be afraid to aim his penis wherever you like.  Guys typically like you to like their semen.  It doesn't mean you have to swallow or even taste it, but treat it with respect and if you want to oogle over it (how much there is, or how far it shot, how thick it is, etc.), go right ahead.  Most guys really like that.  Appearing grossed-out or indifferent about their ejaculation is a huge turn-off.

12) Knowing when to stop - continue light contact until the pulsing has stopped, which will usually be 5-10 seconds after the last bit of semen has seeped or shot out.  Holding his penis firmly with little or no movement usually is enough at the end.  Avoid any stroking at this point.

13) Clean-up - A warm, damp towel is usually really good.  Guys usually feel grateful if you gently wipe up the mess for them.  Most guys find it very sexy.
