If he says a woman is "plain" - exactly what does a man mean by that?

If you called someone "plain" what would YOU mean?

"Plain" means, nothing special.

I agree with the others, that "plain" generally means nothing special.

I've never heard a man say "I'm a plain man" or that he wanted a "plain woman", you sure you mean "plain" and not "simple"?

Why do you ask?

I have definitely heard men use the word "plain" to refer to themselves. And I've always understood it to mean "uncomplicated" or "not fussy." Yes, it does mean "simple."

I do think that in most cases "plain" when referring to a woman refers to a woman's appearance and is saying "nothing special," but I could see a context ("A plain old-fashioned gal," for example) where it would refer to personality and mean "uncomplicated."

Anyway, my point was just that contexts vary.

I see your point. But the word "plain" by itself, as the OP used it, is definitely not a compliment.
