I used to keep my checkbook so organized, I could open my statement, see the transactions I knew about that the bank didn't, add or subtract those and be in balance. I have even done it in the post office before I even left with the statement.
Since I use my debit card mostly, I run out of space on my check register before I have to order checks. I know I have to keep track of what I "spend" on my debit card, so have started putting the amount, date and who to on a small sheet of paper in my check book. I go to the bank site a couple times a week to update.
I don't even use a checkbook register anymore, because of those kinds of discrepancies popping up. Plus, hubby's dyslexic, so he'd put something in wrong and throw the whole thing out of whack, lol. I used Microsoft Money until I got my new computer a few years ago and didn't want to pay extra for that, so now I have an Excel spreadsheet set up.
I enter info from my bank account into the spreadsheet at least every other day, if not daily, since we have free online banking, and I enter check details into it whenever I write a check. Then I can let Excel do all the calculating for me and since it's on my computer, hubby doesn't touch it, but rather just hands me receipts from his purchases.
We had the same problem with register. Now I use a checkbook program, plus go online daily to check our account. Since checks got so expensive AND the bank wanted to charge for returning the canceled ones to me, we use very few checks. We reserve the debit card for mostly groceries. The monthly bank statements come on 3 hole paper, so are easily stored in a binder. I did have to remind my DILS that one of them will need to walk DH through the system if I croak. He just refuses to learn.
We use very few checks, too, and recently the bank gave us the option of receiving online statements, rather than the ones for the binder, so we went that route, too. And, lol, I think my dh would need to be walked through everything, too, if something happened to me, lol.
I use two separate banks, one for house stuff and one for the direct deposit and truck stuff. I transfer the money I use for the house from the other. But the truck account lets me reconcile the statement online. Problem is, with me using debits and
We switched banks years ago for a similar problem. We chewed them out and left them for another bank and never had a single problem with the new bank. The old one has since been bought out and their ads promise better customer service, but if we do switch, it'll be to a credit union, too. ;)
