No phone service for three days!

Therefore, my internet connection has been sporadic at best! I've had to make all messages short and sweet....lol

Monday, I called repair service to report this crackle on my line that sounded like bacon frying. Now, I live about 750' back from the street, down a little country lane. My house was built back in the 50s so the phone installation is pretty old. The phone truck came out, and he and he ripped out all the old lines (we had had two phone lines here when DH was alive), he reinstalled a new one (for just one phone) and a 'state of the art' new phonebox on the house.

A couple hours after he left, I picked up the phone to make a call, and heard this horrendous roar and no dial tone. So I called rapair service again to report this, and when the installer came back the next day, he was surprised that it was not working. He located the company bucket truck to come out again and work on the poled out on the street, but by nightfall last night the problem was not fixed.

Hopefully it will be repaired by noon today! Somehow, I keep hearing the phone ring, I try to answer and just get that terrible roar, and when I let the answering machine pick up the call, that part works, however, it does not record any messages left. I do have a cellphone to use, but I'm still curious as to who is trying to reach me on the house phone. I just hope it is not some family emergency and they don't have my cell number.

I'll post this while I still have a connection, and try to come back later on today with good news that my phone is finally working!

Is your internet connection DSL?

We occasionally have problems with our landline too, the crackling or sometimes it just goes dead. Usually after a rain storm, and they attribute it to moisture getting into the box on the pole or the switch box on the street several blocks away etc. We pay for coverage in case the problem is with the wiring on our side, that "insurance" is going up just like medical insurance! We're planning to discontinue our personal landline soon (dh will keep a landline for his home office). We both have cell phones, and Skype installed on our computers. The majority of the calls on the land line are solicitation/telemarketing calls (even though we're on the do not call list) and the service is getting so expensive that it would be cheaper to pay occasional extra minutes on the cell phone.

I sure hope that you get your phone and internet problems resolved soon.

I hope they can get it fixed for you today, Liz. Can the phone company forward your calls to your cell phone until it's fixed? I know I would usually have to forward my calls from the house phone, but I would imagine they could do it on their end if you ask.

Thanks for keeping a close check on our board, Jen! It's very satisfying to know someone is around here quite often to pick up on recent messages.

You know, I never once thought about having phone calls transferred to my cellphone! That could prove to be quite expensive if the incoming calls were not placed from the same provider as mine, and there are three of us on our callphone plan. I just may check that out anyway, for we never know what emergency could crop up in our lives, do we?

My phone service was restored last Thursday morning (the 21st) and thank haven all the problems were external ones and not within the house for it happened I had several errands to run and did not need to be tied up here at home!

If I lost phone service I would be sitting in a corner twitching from withdrawal! I have my DSL and a fax machine connected to my home phone and that is it. No phone, no internet!

Liz, I'm probably not the best one to be explaining anything technical LOL but I'll try. Skype is an application that lets you communicate by voice via computer using the computer's built-in microphone and speaker. After it is installed you have to get your friends/family to "accept" your user name (anyone that already has it installed) and then you can contact each other. If both users have a web cam then you can video chat too. There is also an option to call a telephone from your computer but that is not free like the audio and video services; however I think it costs only a few cents per minute.

I've only used it once. My dh was in Mexico and we arranged yo Skype at a certain time. My computer has a webcam but his laptop doesn't so we used the audio function. The voice quality was excellent, much better than when he calls me from there on his cellphone, and we saved several dollars.

I have also video-chatted

Thanks so much for the explanation of Skype! You were quite clear about it, and if I decide it's something I'll use, I'll check it out more thoroughly. I so seldom use the telephone services I have that maybe it's not for me and maybe it is, somewhere down the line! lol Since I'd heard the expression before, I was just curious about it.

I agree about the 11-to-30-year-olds that know this technology inside out! It's amazing how they can pick it up with a snap of their fingers. I've had a computer for several years and I'm still learning about them.

By the way, since I've lost all my data when this laptop was wiped clean, I've forgotten which board you host and have promised to come visit from time to time. Let me know, or leave a link to it and I'll be sure to pop in occasionally. I sure do miss all the files I had on my hard drive, and plan to keep everything backed up from now on! I can no longer use the IE browser, for that same screen comes up saying, "IE has stopped working". It is a mystery to me andy to anyone I mention it to! I'm using Google Chrome now, and still in the learning process....
