It's funny, but I was the one who put off those conversations with C. when we were dating. My ex-bf was so commitment-phobic that I was afraid I would scare off C. if I brought up marriage talk.

I remember he tried to casually mention things like "if we shared a home, we would get along so well because..." -- and

To be honest, I'm not sure the whole "putting the ball in his court" is the best move. I tried that. And then I drove myself nuts waiting for him to bring it up. I finally got so upset, he knew something was wrong and I just said, "You told me you'd start a conversation about something that was important to me and I've been waiting for weeks!" He assured me he hadn't forgotten about it and apologized and then we talked. I think he was dreading the conversation because that topic tended to get so emotional. But I told him that it was all the waiting that made it that way. And that I didn't want these conversations to be such a big deal. And after that, when we left the ball in his court, we also made an "appointment" for when we were going to talk about it. Then the conversations were much lighter and happier. I didn't have to sit around wondering when he would bring something up and he didn't have to figure out what the right time was. We really only did that once. After we had a relaxed happy conversation about it, starting conversations were much easier to start and more enjoyable for both of us to have.

And it all worked out -- we're engaged!! He asked me on Tuesday night!!!!
