Just a bit of background: C's ex-wife has undiagnosed mental and learning disabilities which contribute to her not being able to handle the girls part of the time or even to a certain extent, live on her own. She has only lived out on her own without anyone else to help her once, and that ended with her losing any chance of ever having permanent custody of the girls. She moved in with her father and he recently told her he wanted her out of his house because he wanted to move on with a new relationship in his life (he's a widower).
She rented a house recently and claimed that the girls would be fine living with her. The house is only a few blocks from C's current house. The youngest girl, A, can be a handful because of her own developmental and mental disabilities. It's no secret that the ex-wife cannot keep her under control and A has wandered off from her many, many times. Today, it's finally hit the fan. A wandered off from her mother's house and the cops called C at work wanting to know why she would be walking around town by herself. C is furious and he'll have to pick up the girls tonight. They have two counselors who work with C, the girls and his ex so I'm sure as soon as he gets in contact with them, they will be on the phone getting the girls to a safe place.
This probably will mean that we will have the girls full time now, because if the police are involved, I doubt the ex will ever get to see the girls without supervision, either by order of the court or because C will not let her see them. I'm thankful this happened while he's still living here in his town and not when we've moved into a house where I live.
