Here's my question: Why are some Sabbats referred to as "Lesser Sabbats" and some are referred to as "Greater Sabbats"? I have always thought of them as equal and was wondering why some see them as not being equal.

Thanks!

Great question and thanks for posting. Unfortunately for me, this is one of the reasons its hard for me to CL here, because I am not a practicing Pagan who is into Wicca or other traditions that celebrate the Sabbats. As a Taoist I look to the Chinese Lunar Calendar and their Holidays. However I looked into it for you (I do love to read and learn about all types of Paganism) and from what I can tell, the 4 Sabbats that fall on the solstices and equinoxes are known as the Lesser Sabbats, but I dont think its meant in a derogatory way or that they are any less important. They are also known as Quarter days since the way they divide the wheel of the year and Sun Sabbats because they are based on the postion of the sun. The Greater Sabbats are also known as cross quarter days and Moon Sabbats. Sometimes knows as esbats as well. Traditionally the lesser Sabbats are a time of celebration and the greater Sabbats a time for 'magical' work which may account for the way they are named. Hope this helps and I know we have several posters who know more about this and hopefully they will chime in. Peace,

Hi, Amelia! :) Here is a link with some information:

Personally, as a Wiccan, I observe them all as more or less equally important, as a way to connect formally to the Lady and Lord. The wonderful thing is we are free to decide how we wish to worship, creating our own tradition or following more closely those already established. As a Solitary most of the time, I have developed my own path over the years, with the basics from Scott Cunningham and Starhawk books. :P I hope that helps! ;)

Thanks, Caly!

I had previously heard some of what you said in your post, although it still doesn't make sense to me. I guess that's ok, though, as there seem to be

Thanks, Gypsy! I looked at the site provided in your link, and although informative, it still did not provide a satisfactory answer (to my way of thinking). Oh well! I think I will continue to think of the Sabbats
