Hi! I am new to this board. My husband and I started Atkins diet 3 days ago. However, after reading his book there are several things I disagree with. My friend told me about the Southbeach diet and it seems to lead you to just what I know to be true with a good healthy diet. I only have about 10 - 15 lbs to lose and my husband has about 40 - 50. We are also looking for a general healthy way of eating. Has anybody else compared the 2 diets or felt the same way as I do about Atkins and gone with the SB diet in the end? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I'm going to buy the book in just a little while. I actually seem excited about this diet.

I am figuring the "nuts" comment was for aserbentas? Yes, Atkins induction is only two weeks, however, allowed nuts on SBD in the first two weeks is a difference between the two. I think that is the point being made. DIFFERENCES in the two WOE styles is the point being made in these posts. Thank you for enlightening me on the atkins association with diabetes, and in this instance, I stand corrected. My most humble apologies if I offened you in any way. It's all good. Happy Eating!

With the highly active lifestyle that I have, I really NEEDED the carbs from beans...not so much the nuts. Some who exercise are able to sacrifice the exercise for 2 weeks, but I wouldn't do it.

I too have blood sugar problems and went to this WOE when realizing it was what my nutritionist put me on when I was pregnant (SBD wasn't out in the public yet, but it was pretty much phase 2). It worked then and worked now. I'm glad your father didn't need the insulin. That's motivation for anyone!

I was always skeptical of these "diets" but after seeing that I didn't gain any weight in my last 3 months of pregnancy (my son was gaining though and ended up being 8 pounds 2 ounces a week early) I knew there must be something to this thing!

Again, I'm happy to hear about your father getting his blood sugar stabilized:)

Hi all,

I have done both of these diets. My father was on Atkins for 12 years (religiously) because of heart disease. During those 12 years (yes his cholesterol went down) but was rushed to the hospital twice with heart failure. The cholesterol goes down just by virtue of the weight loss. The high fat content of the diet does nothing for clearing out arteries. The Atkins diet was developed by the Mayo Clinic to fight diabetes specifically (NOT HEART DISEASE). The South Beach Diet takes the Atkins concepts but it is healthier and you can maintain it long term. It may be harder but it is sustainable for life. I just would not want to see anyone developing the heart complication my father did because of the Atkins diet.

We are very happy to have you here - express all you like!

Cathy
