My husband wondered about chili. It seems like it would be OK if you could find healthy, low-sugar tomato sauce? Thoughts?

Try using tomato paste or tomato puree and your own spices. That way, you don't have to worry at all about the sugar in the prepared sauce. To one large pot, I usually add onions, red and green bell pepper, garlic, a lot of chili powder (2 tbs), pepper, oregano, 2 bay leaves, and thyme. I like either red kidney beans or black beans the best, and I buy canned, because they are easier to deal with.

Emily,

I make chili all the time. It is such a satisfying meal and the family loves it. It's great too since we are in fall now. I brown turkey meat, garlic, onions, red and green peppers. Then I add an 8 ounce can of tomato sauce, usually albertsons brand and 1 can of water. I also add 1 can of chopped tomatoes. Add 1 large can of dark red kidney beans. I do not drain mine. I like to buy a product that I think is called My Brown Bag of Chili, something like that. It is a small brown paper bag and it has ALL the spices you need to put in the chili, spices, hot chili powder, salt and mesa flour mix for thickening. I do not use the mesa flour because I am not sure if it is allowed. I usually sprinkle some shredded cheddar cheese on top of mine. It is so good and I get a lot of compliments from it. I know that Albertson's and Publix carries the little brown bag of spices. Look in the section that carries the packets of gravy mixes, or the ethnic foods aisle, not in the spice aisle. Hope this helps.

Emily,

The name of the brown chili bag I mentioned in the previous post is Carroll Shelby's Chili Kit. Wow, that sure is a different name than what I told you yesterday. LOL Anyway, look for it....you'll love it.

Can I make chili minus the beans for Phase I? I can, right? Haven't read the book yet, but browsed the internet. So minus the beans, all other ingredients are allowed, correct?

Why would you want to? You those beans for good carbs. This is not atkins, and SBD does not restrict carbs to a number. Now, if you don't like beans, just eat! lol.

Happy eating!

Actually, I did Dark Red Kidneys, limas, green beans, black beans (they were my closest friend), and other legumes. Did you get the book or a grocery list?

I thought not getting the book was a good idea after I read the book, but I see tons of posts from people who don't do their research (not saying that you didn't do the research), and some get discouraged, some research through websites (I would suggest this, but the book recipies are great too), and some think this WOE is a quick fix. Others come from Atkins wanting to try things out, but they still keep atkins's principles in tact.

Whatever you decide, make this WOE your own. Mix, blend, and go from there. If you are knocking off the weight, then keep eating! lol. Get that grocery list from hippodamia.com or there was an updates list posted somewhere on this board. You'll do fine! eat your beans! ;)

Beans are low on the glycemic index and therefore do not drastically affect your blood sugar which is what this "diet" is based on. They are packed with fiber and vitamins so you can't go wrong. They are filling too so with your regular veggie and a meat at dinner, you will be set!

I use V8 or tomato juice and a can of crushed tomatoes in my chili. Chili mix is Wick Fowler's False Alarm chili and I even use 92% FF beef drained and rinsed after browning. Pinto beans make a nice addition.

To me, chili is one of the pluses to this diet since we're, of course, in TEXAS, y'all!
