Phase 1 and Exercise

I am currently working out 5-6 days of week (pretty intense cardio and weight sessions). I am trying to watch my carb intake, but was considering the 2 week Phase 1 to jump start things. I can't imagine working out like I do without eating any carbs. Has anyone does this? Is it worth-while to take 2 weeks off from exercise to do Phase 1? If not, how do you know how many carbs to take in if you start in Phase 2???

Thanks!

I work out pretty vigorously also, but I find that protein produces a better workout. I have much more endurance if I have a cottage cheese and a slice of turkey before working out that when I have a carb. Just my opinion. I know that carbs give you that quick energy boost - but I start slow and work up to a higher pace.

Dr. A recommends very active people to start on phase 2. So, you might just do phase 1 for a couple of days and see how you do. I guess it all depends on whether you feel you are "addicted" to carbs or not to determine whether you should detox in phase one.

I did 2 weeks on phase 1 without cutting down my exercise at all. You just have to make sure you have PLENTY of protein.

Hi, a couple of years ago I was doing a similar diet to Atkins, Protein Power. Basically for 2 weeks I ate eggs and bacon for breakfast, salad for lunch and dinner. Sometimes the dinner salad would have grilled chicken added. Sometimes I would have a little fruit out of a can at night if I got really hungry. I worked out regularly with cardio and weight machines. It worked great. In those two weeks I fit back into my smallest jeans. I only lost a few pounds but it was all fat because I lost inches. I don't think you need a lot of carbs to get a great work out.

Just like with everything else, every body is different.

I am like Monica --- I could not work out with any real intensity on Phase 1 --- even if I ate protein or nuts right before I worked out. I tried adding a little yogurt too and that did not help. I felt horrible when I tried to exercise, but because of the fact that I did have major problems with sugar/carbs, I decided to stick with Phase 1 to complete the "detox" and just do some light walking for exercising or my tapes at a beginners level.

Once I added back in my oatmeal at breakfast, after a couple of days I was able to workout the way I like to again.

Just my experience ---

A lot of it is state of mind. by that, I mean if you really set your mind to it, it can be done. You're not cutting ALL carbs so don't think you won't be getting "any carbs" you've got to make sure to get them from veggies and beans. Try not to get into the mind set that less carbs are better. You're on track with your thinking, the body does need carbs to function.

In my case, I run and crosstrain for 45-60 minutes 4 days a week with a 60+minutes of a run once a week. Top that with 2 days of strength training. I couldn't do mind over matter and did 4 days of P1 before adding wheat toast in the morning, brown rice at dinner, and an occasional sandwhich WITH bread at lunch. That's all I needed to keep my intensity up.

In my father's case, he's a maniac when it comes to these things. He worked out for NO JOKE 3 hours a day (2 one and half workouts a day) doing very intense strenuous stuff. I told him to listen to his body and be careful! He said it was hard but he did it and only after 3 weeks did he add fruit. He lost 13 pounds in those 3 weeks.

I'm not suggesting either one to anyone but just trying to say it's to each his/her own and just listen to what your body's saying. If you are like me, you wouldn't be happy to take 2 weeks off of exercise. That's my most successful way to lose weight not to mention I'm training for a race and couldn't afford to take that time off.

Sorry this was so long winded:) Good luck!
