Hi and welcome.

There is no problem at all if you do not eat dairy. Phase 1, the only dairy you are allowed is low fat cheese and ricotta cheese and they are not mandatory. Phase 2 you can add back in low fat milk, but again, it is optional.

Just make sure you get your calcium from other vegetables, etc. as I am sure you probably do not.

Good luck

Hi Jen,

I started out this diet not doing dairy, but decided to add it after just a few days. It was tough seeing my hubby eat cheese, and I couldn't. I've found that the soy versions of cheese are often higher in carbs, plus most have casein (milk protein) anyway, so I decided to try adding it back. That was my choice. I had been trying to avoid aggravating my Chrohn's disease, but I think my previous problems with dairy were about the lactose, and not about the proteins.

That said, I think you can do this plan without dairy. Your challenge is to keep it from getting too boring, that's all. Plus, like the previous poster said, you have to make sure you get calcium from other sources. You might want to consider taking a calcium supplement.

Anyway, I still don't use dairy milk. I am now in phase II, and when I have cereal I use Yu brand multigrain milk. It's got the calories/fat of whole milk, and the carb profile of skim milk. Because I don't use that much, and the fat isn't unhealthy saturated fat, I don't worry about the extra calories.

Well, I probably didn't help much. Please, do not read into my message and think I'm somehow telling you that you should eat dairy. My main message is that phase I could get a little boring if you don't make an extra effort to have as much variety as possible.

Good luck, and welcome!

Jill K.
