Cheese on Phase 1

I find that I am having a really hard time with the dairy section of Phase 1. I have gone to a few supermarkets to look for fat free cheese and I never find any. I asked at the deli counter too. What I did find was lactose/fat free cheese – is this ok? Can someone tell me the name brands of the cheese (american, swiss, etc.) that they buy. Also I found laughing cow cheese in flavors (garlic & herbs) – is this ok? I have only purchased mozzarella, but I do want american cheese. I found one with 2% is this ok? On ice cream – no sugar added – is this ok? Turkey Hill makes ice cream that is no sugar added. On chocolate – what brands are available and do I use no sugar or sugar free?

Help, the weekend is coming up and would like to treat myself. I am on day 5 and haven’t craved sweets, but just in case – GO YANKEEEEEEEEES!

I love this web site, it is so helpful. Have a lovely weekend everybody!

NO expert here, just on week 2 of Phase 1. So, here is what I think:

On the cheese front -- I have not been using fat free but low fat. In my supermarket there are lots of lowfat cheeses at the deli and cheese cases. The flavored cheeses are OK - they are just herbs.

No icecream or other dairy (outside of fat free milk for coffee) until phase 2. For sweets I have been doing sugarfree jello. Others on the board talk about sugarfree fugscicles, I have not looked for those yet.

HTH! I started Phase 1 on 10/6 and I am now down about 10 pounds.

Good luck.

Phase 1 does not allow any diary other than cheeses. Ice cream will have to wait until Phase 2.

For cheeses, you'll find some people have done very well with full fat cheese, and other will stick with the program and go to low fat or fat free cheeses. I like Craft 2% cheese myself and string cheese. I've also done both full fat and low fat cheeses and have done well. I never tried the laughing cheese, so someone else will have to talk about that side of cheese.

On phase 2, you can add back things. Do you have the shopping lists for the phases? Go to Hippodamia.com to get those items that are legal and illegal on each of the phases. Anyhow, the ice cream that is great is the Carb Smart Bryers or the Le Carb are choices that I have found work well for me. Cheers to your success so far!

No ice cream in phase 1.

2% cheese is the same as low fat. In the town where I go to school I can't find many ff cheeses except american slices, ricotta, and cottage cheese but in my hometown there are a lot more options. But I buy Kraft 2% slices of pepperjack (I love it) and Cabot light (50% less fat) cheddar cheese and of course part skim mozzarella (I buy the lite string cheese)

For a sweet treat look for no sugar added fudgesicles, have some sugar free jello, sugar free hard candies, a TBS of peanut butter (I use simply JIF it has less sugar), or make one of the ricotta desert recipes. You're supposed to keep sweet treats to 75 calories a day but since I don't count calories I'm sure I've gone over the allowed amount a couple times. I'm in phase 2 now and I swear I'm losing faster now then in phase 1. 10 pounds gone!

Have you seen the pre-packaged tofu-based cheeses? They come in several flavors - although, honestly, I can't taste a difference between the cheddar and provolone; and the texture was less than appealing. I was eating them before SBD, so I don't know if the sugar content is out of line. And since getting hooked on mozzarella sticks, I probably won't eat them again.

Also, in the deli case - Alpine Lace cheese is good. I know it comes in a Swiss; there may be other flavors.

I would caution against FF cheeses--be careful and read the ingredients. Many of them are high in starch (aka bad carbs, bad carbs, bad, bad), and are really not as in line with the philosophy of this diet as their low fat counterparts. That, unfortunately, is true of many FF (and sometimes LF) products. For example, many products have modified food starch, which is generally wheat
