I meant to post my "confession" under general discussion, not introductions! Anyway, I had to take care of myself by getting more fiber, and I want to be clear--I know everyone will not be the same way as I am. I have IBS and have always had a hard time with animal protien. I think I overdid the lean meat and eggs for my body, and ended up feeling awful. Anyway, I phase II'd myself early, and I am enjoying high fiber cereal and apples. I hope no one else has the difficulty I did, but I still like this way of eating. I am happy to have gone this long with no sugar or white flour, and I am into slow weight loss over the long haul anyway. I think it is healthier for me. Anyway, don't mean to suggest that others do this, just telling you what happened to me and how I handled it. Thanks for listening. Have a good weekend!

Hi Kimmie,

I understand your IBS difficulties. I have Chrohn's, which is a recent diagnosis, but I also have had IBS with constipation on and off for years. I, too, had a difficult time in phase I. I ended up taking a lot of fiber supplements. I still sometimes take them in phase II.

I'm glad you're feeling better on phase II. Phase II is "it", anyway. I mean, this is how we are going to be eating from now on. Yes, once we reach our goal, we will probably eat some larger portions, and/or indulge in an occasional sugary or starchy treat, but for the most part this is it. And doctor Agatston does say that even starting at any phase is fine, and switching over earlier, and moving back and forth between, the different phases is what we will do for life.

I, too, feel so good not eating sugar and refined starches. After just a couple of days on phase I, I didn't crave that stuff. I did miss it, though. Now, after 7 weeks total on SB, I'm not even missing the stuff anymore. This is just beyond my wildest expectations. And plus, back to the IBS/Chrohn's problems, I'm now feeling much better than pre-SB. I think it probably takes us IBSers a bit longer to adjust.

Kimmie, so glad you're feeling so great!!

Hugs,

Jill K.

Jill,

Thanks for your support! I'm feeling good this morning. I just ate a fresh pear, and it tasted sweeter than sugar! The taste buds are recovering from years of too many sweets and are tasting the natural sweetness in foods. Plus....I lost 2 more pounds, bringing me to a total of 5 lost so far.

I'm glad this diet is flexible. This way we can make it our own, and eat the best way for each of our individual needs.

Hugs,

Kimmie

Kimmie,

You set off a lightbulb for me! I have been feeling totally awful since day 2 (am now on day 8). I think it is all of the animal proteins. I have had IBS, and perhaps I wasn't thinking, but the way I feel probably is from all of the proteins. I think I need to get some tofu at the store tomorrow! I want to stick it out a little longer in p1 if I can, but I am hoping that, like you p2 makes me feel better.

I totally agree that you have to do what makes you feel better. You know your body best. The dr himself talks about starting at p2 for certain people (e.g. pregnant or breastfeeding, certain health conditions). While IBS wasn't listed, perhaps it should be.

The thing is, without all of the processed foods, you are doing your body good in p2. If moving a little early worked for you, I say all the best!

IBS can cause either constipation or diarrhea--frequently we alternate between the two. Every case is different.

Hi there ---

I have ulcerative cholitis, so I have the opposite of some of you people with the IBS with constipations. (Kimmie --- your exactly right on the IBS some people have predominantly diarrhea, some have constipation and some have both depending on your bowel's mood ;) )!!!!

I do better with more protein and less fiber, so I have had a hard time with adding back in the carbs --- have to stick to lower fiber carbs (although, I will have 1 piece of high fiber bread (5 grams) 1 - 2 x a week. I have done well with yogurt and salads made with baby romaine or spinach --- I have problems when I use anything other than the baby greens, and most of my other foods cooked real well. The cauliflower mashed potatoes is great for me because normally I can't eat cauliflower/brocolli --- but because I put it in my food processor --- I can eat it a couple of times a week.

This is what I love about SBD --- is you can adjust it to meet your needs and the bottom line is the uncontrolled eating feeling is gone :)!!!!!

Kimmy!

Such a relief to read your post. I am officially on day 1 of phase 1. (I actually started training last week on phase 2!) I had no problem difficulty following last week except for a couple of nights when I had wine -- was out to dinner! And so do not miss my starches and sugars and thought I was going to have such a hard time doing this!

But my confession is this... I can not give up fruit. I so look forward to my daily apple and I am not going to give it up. I can not get breakfast in the am as am too busy shuffling the kids (2 and 4) to school. If I did not get my apple I would get ravenous and eat much worse... used to eat a daily granola bar... If I had only known!

I have had no problem with the light cheeses and rolled up turkey or ham slices and V8 juice. I really only want to lose 5 to 10 lbs and am not going to beat myself up over my daily apple! But I too have IBS, not with constipation! And red meats and things cooked with butter and heavy dairy really upset my stomach too as does too much veggie fiber in one sitting... I get crampy when someone even mentions the word Atkins!!!!!!!

I chose South Beach because I wanted a way of eating in which the kids could co-exist in the same house... I want my young kids to see me eating healthy foods veggies, lean meats, fish and fruit. I also never plan on using the word diet in front of them, especially my 4 y.o daughter.

I am looking forward to my first South Beach dinner and I am going to have a putanesca sauce over tallapia (sp!?) and the mashed cauliflower and asparagus!

Which foods and food combinations could you best tollerate? I would love to hear your feedback.

Hi Jessica!

Congratulations on your success so far! I am feeling better now that I have added oatmeal, high-fiber all bran, apples, pears and strawberries back into my diet. Today I made a casserole of brown rice, black beans, salsa, cottage cheese and low-fat cheddar. It tasted great and was filling.

I'm still "cleansing" from too much protein last week. I am taking six fiber capsules every day in addition to the food, and I have cut my portions of eggs and fish in half. I eat very little red meat anyway.

I find that the veggie burgers work well for me, as do the morningstar farms sausage links. I spent many years as a complete vegetarian, and I still do not really like red meat. I don't digest it very well.

My goal right now is to limit the carbs to my morning and afternoon meal and have veggies and a small amount of protein for dinner. I have added in the red wine, and it really helps me feel satisfied with a light dinner. I enjoy the sugar-free treats for desserts in very small amounts.

I think it's great that you are thinking about your childrens' health and their future attitudes toward food. As a mother of two teenage daughters, I can tell you the culture really does a number on their body images and eating habits. They need all the support they can get at home.

Keep on posting and eating healthy!

BTW, I am losing faster on phase II. I think because I am digesting food better.
