lean muscle loss?

Hi everyone,

I have a question. I began the SB diet last wednesday....and it just so happens I am also on a fitness program...since last wednesday I have lost 5 pounds...have not felt hungry, pants don't feel looser, and I was surprised when I stepped on the scale at the gym this morning. It just so happened that I had an assesment test this morning....According to the body fat analysis, all 5 of those pounds are lean muscle....not fat. Can someone help?

Thanks,

Michelle

Thanks to everyone for the tips/suggestions, etc...I am going to try to add a bit more from phase two in and see how that goes....I am not even sure that he figured it right...maybe it's late, and I just cannot think straight...if my body fat comp was 30% when I was 172 pounds, and today I weighed in at 164.5 with a body comp of 29.5, how do you figure that out?

BTW, how are those mashed cauliflowers? I am also not a vegie eater, but I am really trying hard!

I've had them and like them, but my DH and DS aren't thrilled. I've liked all the recipes I've tried from the book with the exception of the spinach breakfast quiches. Those are just too frozen spinachy (?) for my taste. If I make them again, I'll cut back a little on the spinach and add some cheese and sun dried tomatoes or something like that. I love the oven roasted veggies and have come up with other variations that are very good. Also, asparagus on the grill is delicious. It looks yucky, but is almost sweet.

Some other recipe favorites from the book are the poached salmon and the chocolate covered dried apricots with pistachios. I served those at a big gathering, and everyone loved them. They seem very gourmet.

Rhonda,

I did not like the spinach breakfast quiche either...my DH did, though. I like the idea of sun dried tomatoes...

Hi again!

The fact that it was an electronic gismo might be the problem. I had simialar issues with my electronic body-fat scale during phase 1--I was losing weight, but my body fat went through the roof according to the scale.

I think it has to do with the water you lose durning P1; it throws off the electronics some how. Ask your trainer to measure you with calipers during P1.

Cheers,

Stacy

I also did not like the spinach quiches. I have tried melted cheese on top when I warm them up and either pepper vinegar (which I make from Hubby's hot peppers from the garden and white vinegar) or either sugarless ketchup or Frank's Red Hot Sauce.

I think they need twice the amount of egg and cheese, plus some onion and even Splenda. Way too much spinach.....

Stacy,

So you did not actually put on body fat, but it said you did? He did ask me if I drank a lot of water that morning (which I didn't), noting that it messes it up. I have been working hard over the past 6 weeks or so to build up some muscle...I just hope my new eating habts are not undoing what I have already done :-(

Now me, I am a muscular gal in my legs. That is where a lot of my muscle weight is carried. Anyhow, I haven't noticed an muscle loss, but I have notice more definition in my legs and in my arms and back. I guess when you get rid of excess fat, you start to see what i under there. My lower chest/upper stomach is starting to show some signs of sculpting my obliques. I haven't take a body fat count in a little over a year. I said all this to say I feel as though I am just showing off what I have a little more than losing anything. IMO, skin calipers by someone who knows how to use them are the best idea. Anyhow, just my two cents. Thanks!

I couldn't understand how you could be losing muscle, specially when you're working out. Now, I don't know if I'm calculating this right, but the numbers I come up with look good.

You started at 172 lbs, so 30% of that is 51.6 (i guess that's lbs?)(172 x .3)

now you're at 164.5 lbs, so 29.5% of that is 48.5275.

If I figured that right, then you eliminated 3.08 lbs of fat !!!

Please if I've made a mistake here someone let Mally know, since I'm no expert on body fat and all that.

Phew! All that math makes my head hurt!

I agree with everyone else --- 5 lbs of muscle loss is a little hard to imagine happening in a week or 2.

From what I have read over the years --- the only really accurate way of testing body fat vs muscle mass is with the water inversion test that is extremely expensive and hard to find.

The 2nd most accurate way is calipers with someone that really knows how to use them.

I have used the body fat scales too and over a matter of hours it can give you very different readings. I have never heard of the steering wheel thing though :)!!!

I agree--- add some more protein and a really high quality carb or 2 and see what happens.

Yes, you figured those numbers correctly. What the trainer said was if you don't eat enough, your body goes into starvation mode, attacking muscle first....but I was not hungry. I was eating breakfast, snacks, lunch, and supper...drinking lots of water and staying hydrated. I hope you are all right and it was not accurate in its reading....

Thanks,

Michelle
