Started today...felt very sick

I started the South Beach today-more as a way of eating more healthfully than as a diet to lose weight. I felt very sick a couple of hours after lunch-nauseous, headache, chest pain, just plain horrible. I broke down and drank some milk and now I feel better. What is the deal with this? Did anyone else experience this?

I'm upset because this is exactly how I felt when I did Atkins for a day a while back. I couldn't even last one day.

I started on post on this last week, as I got a really bad migraine on day 2. I had the headache, visual disturbances, nausea, and later got even worse with a sore throat, constipation, dizziness, and more. I couldn't believe I was doing this to myself. A little over a week later, I can say I am feeling a bit better, though NOT good. I am still experiencing most of these symptoms, though not nearly as severe.

I, too, didn't survive Atkins (was REALLY sick). I, too, had a small glass of milk in week 1....how funny that you did the same. And, it seemed to help me, too. I figured it was better to have milk than a sugary snack. At least it had some vitamins.

I cannot say if this is really good for me or not, but I am trying to last a bit longer.

Some groups have been listed as people who should go right to p2. The weight supposedly comes off much slower, but it might be something to think about. Whatever you decide, best wishes to you! The people on this board are very supportive.

I had BAD IBS symptoms after one week on phase I. Perhaps it would be a good idea to talk to a doctor?

I am finding phase II to be much better, and I am losing weight faster on phase II.

We are all so different in our responses to dietary changes.

Pay attention to your body.

Just my opinion.

I can't help but wonder if some of us with IBS symptoms and diagnosed with IBS might actually be suffering from some kind of food allergies. This is just my opinion based on my experience, but when I get off grains and dairy products my stomach is SO much better. I've had all kinds of tests from specialists except allergy tests. I've just noticed on my own that if I avoid certain foods, I go for months at a time with no problem. Has anybody else

I felt the same way on days 1,2,and 3. But on day 4, I felt much better. I too, had to have a few "extras", like FF lite yogurt the first day, a few extra nuts, etc. to get through, but I still lost weight.

If you can stick it out, you WILL feel better. I think a lot of it is the body going through "carb/sugar withdrawal". If someone had told me I would actually get used to this phase 1 thing and NOT feel tired, weak, etc, I wouldn't have believed them. But it is true, I DID get better. I feel great now, and more motivated to stick with it than ever.

Good luck, and hang in there.

It just occurred to me, too, that sometimes when our body is getting rid of toxins and actually getting healthier, we can feel worse for the first few days. This is known as a healing crisis, and many people who use alternative or holistic forms of health and wellness treatments are familiar with them.

Thank you for that karen....today is the end of my first day on SBD. This afternoon I started to get a headache, although i felt full. I had quite a few more nuts than what is supposed to be allowed in Phase one but other than that had a fairly good day.

I hope tomorrow will only get easier!

Have you cut back on caffeine recently? That can give you a doozie of a headache!
