I am a 20 year old college student that wants to lose the freshman 15 and learn to eat healthy. Do you guys think this diet would work for me? Thanks, any advice would be helpful.

It could be for you. Do you commute or live on campus - the food choices at home are better than on campus. Do you like to cook and do you have access to cooking facilities all the time? That'll help.

Just some thoughts...

Thanks Donna

I think I'm going to buy the book this weekend and start after halloween.

Thinking back to my college days, I think a person on campus could find healthy choices to create their own SBD, too. Good luck and stop in here often!

I am so glad to see this posting. I asked the same question two other times and got very little response.

This is what I have figured out by reading Atkins, SBD, Woodruff's "The Good Carb Cookbook" and McCullough's "Low-Carb Cookbook". Atkins stresses fats and very limited carbs as you know, and the other three limit fats, sugars and high-carb foods.

I have lost weight, 17 lbs in 6 wks, on Atkins, but the high fat concerns me a bit, and that is why I am considering switching over. Just can't find the right answers yet. It seems that weight loss on SBD is much slower......this I have learned by reading the two bulletin boards for each diet.

Any advice or help from anyone would be appreciated by both of us I am sure.

While I think it's wonderful that so many people are interested in this board, and, consequently, so many people are interested in improving their health. However, I do notice that a lot of posts get lost and/or end up getting posted multiple times. Just a reminder that it before posting, it is good to read other posts and see if your topic has been covered recently. If you can reply to a recently covered topic, it will bring that topic back up to the front page, so that others may see it and post, as well.

To both jcrh62 and kkani (and any other college students who are here): Are you living in the dorms or off campus with a meal plan or off campus without a meal plan? If with a meal plan, does your DC take special requests?

I think it can work for you. I lost 20 lbs on an eating plan just like this when was in my sophmore year of college - and living in a dorm, on a meal plan that included breakfast, lunch & dinner. This was before SBD plan was published so I just avoided processed foods, breads, starches, sugary foods and desserts on my own. I came back to SBD recently because it, or my plan just like it, had worked so well for me in college.

Read the book, or better yet, go to the SBD website, to learn all you can about what to eat and what not to eat. Do the best you can - if dinner is spaghetti & meat balls, just eat the meatballs. It may not be perfect, but it'll be better than not trying.

I know you can do it because I did. Good luck.

That sounds like an excellent suggestion, Jill, and a very workable one for students with a meal plan.

Thanks so much ladies. I do have a meal plan that lets us choose from a wide variety of foods. I'm going to try to cook my own meals when I can on Phase 1, because I do have a kitchen. But I was wondering if there is anything I can substitute for the vegetable juice cocktail b/c I can't stand V8. Thanks again, I trying to get rid of all my junk food and then I'm going to start the program.

Hi,

You don't have to drink the v-8. I agree, I just couldn't stand it. I think that the acid is somehow beneficial in the fat burning process. My dh always liked tomato juice and is doing well with drinking 6 oz. in the a.m. But I did it a few mornings and rather not.

Good luck!
