Hi everyone - I have been doing the Atkins diet now for about 4 months with great results (I lost about 22 lbs) however I have been feeling sluggish the last month or so and have been wondering if long term low carb ( although I have added some fruit and nuts to my menu I still remain at about 25-30 carbs a day) is the culprit. What I want to know is does anyone know how one would go about "transitioning" from Atkins to South Beach if I should decide to do so? Is the web site any good or is their a support group that I could contact? I would imagine that I would not start with Phase 1 of South Beach because I have really done that with Atkins, no?

Although I have not made up my mind for sure, I want to see what kind of changes I would be making to my diet by switching - I hear folks go back and forth onm the Atkins VS South Beach debate but I want to get down to details...... any help would be appreaciated

Sue,

The biggest change would be adding back your high fiber carbs.

Thanks for the reply Tina! I have a few more questions, if you don't mind. The whole grain breads - is this like the 7 grain bread that I see in my local supermarket or, is this only sold in health food stores? Also, as you know, Atkins does not require low fat cheeses, dressings, etc. (although he does place limits on the amounts) - do you eat low fat cheeses, dressings, etc. on SB?

Hi,

I made the transition from Atkins to Southbeach. I was on Atkins for about 6 mos and really liked it, but my cholesterol kept getting higher- I even started on medication for it. So I thought I would switch to a lower fat program like sbd which still doesn't have refined sugars- I've been on this for 3 wks. It was a difficult move- especially the low fat cheeses and not having the bars to snack on, but after a week I'm really loving it. I'm eating a lot of veggies- which I didn't realize how much I missed on Atkins, and beans and soups. I'm almost at my goal weight so I started adding back whole grain bread, instead of just low carb bread. I'm finding it very easy. If I can help you in any way, I'd be happy to. Good luck.

Thanks for the info - it's good to hear from folks who know Atkins, I hope you don't mind a few questions......First, did you go right to SB Phase II? I was on Atkins induction for months so I can't imagine that I would start with Phase I. From reading, it seems that the major differences would be that I would eat lower fat cheeses instead of fujll fat as well as lean cuts of meats and no butter. Also, it seems that I can have 1% milk, rice (brown and wild), FF sugar free yogurt & whole grain - high fiber breads & cereals (which I could not have on Atkins!!). Are there any other major differences that you see?

I think that I can live without the bars but I will still keep my Le Carb Ice Cream LOL!

Hi

I did go through phase 1 for 2 weeks. I guess I was hoping to jolt my system a little since I was on pre maintenace phase for Atkins. I did lose about 5 lbs in the 2 weeks. I'm doing phase 2 adding back either whole grain bread or fruit each day. I made the phase 2 pistachio bark- really good- too good. I haven't added brown rice, whole wheat pasta or sweet potato yet, I don't really want them anymore. At this point I'm not losing so I'm going to do phase 1 on one day and phase 2 the next. I only have 5 lbs left to go so I'm trying to get it over with. I feel it's healthier eating than Atkins, but I don't want to get back to carb cravings. Hope this helps.
