Opinions - Can you abuse Phase 1?

I have been seeing this come up in several posts about stalling out during TOM or stalling while adding back carbs. Some people suggest going back to phase one for a little bit or revamping the good carbs.

My question is what are ya'll thoughts on Phase one and abusing the phase? Better yet, could phase 1 be used as a crutch? I don't know what i think of this, but I am interested in hearing what everyone has to say. I have read on the Atkins board, that their induction stage can be abused and cause problems.

Thanks in advance.

Gabeachgirl,

Thanks! You seems to know your stuff regarding the SBD. I posed the question to see what people thought. If anyone has learned anything about me is what works for me, works for me. What works for you, workds for you. I'm not going to steer you to something else because I can't steer you to something else either. Anyhow, most of the comments on this thread are interesting to hear the different points made. I still don't know where I stand on the issue.

I can see going back to phase 1 if you went of vacation and went crazy. I could see Phase 1 if you fell off the SBD Hammock and went nutso for a week. I cannot see going back to phase 1 because of a 1 or 2 lb gain. However, a person's body works much different than mine might. I know how to combat things. I am also not a scale rider, as my weigh in days are on Fridays now because Wednesdays were kind weird for me. So, thanks for all the information and ideas. Believe me, I wasn't questioning anyone's method of madness for SDB. I was just curious.

Thanks Ria, but I'm totally still on a learning curve for now.

Here is how I see it. Ph 1 and Ph 2 is not a "diet" but a life style. Did you ever meet a "normally" thin person, who won't eat lunch cause they are going out to dinner? Or they over-ate during the holiday's and have dedicated themselves to cutting back and working out more. Or they have a wedding over the weekend and want to fit into the dress so they skip the fat filled treats. People like me say to people like that "oh yeah, you really look like need to cut back at 125lbs." But they got it, man! A lot of "normally" thin people do WORK or ADJUST to keep their trim, healthy bodies. We just don't notice it. I have never passed up a meal or treat for anything. I just assume that they are the stupid one and that that donut they just passed up won't hurt anyway. Boy, did I have it wrong. No, the donut didn't hurt, but the cheeseburger, fries and coke I ate just before the donut DID!

The way I see it is that you have to adjust for the pounds and if it means going back between Ph 1 and Ph 2 to reduce your cabs, bad fats and sugars intake than that is what you have to do. This is what our "normally" thin counterparts have been doing all along.

Hello Ria, I think I get it, and this was discussed in the book. The phases are flexible, for example, I imagine I will partake in some Thanksgiving goodies, and will probably not weigh myself but will just plan on a week or two of phase 1 again the following weeks, in order to maintain or re-establish my weight loss. I hope this is clear, I think the phases were designed as a flexible way of eating, and it is not really abuse, but it is also not an excuse to overindulge after we have worked so hard.

BTW, tough game Saturday, it was really anyone's game until the very end, but glad we came out on top, this time! Your gator friend, Janet ;)
