A co-worker suggested to me that the IBS might be irritated by the SF chocolate I eat for a treat. Anyone else get symptoms from that?

It is so good, but totally not worth it if it makes my stomach hurt this bad!!

that could be doing it. If I eat more than a few grams of it at a time --- I get major diarrhea and gas and cramps. Where you have IBS with constipation --- it may not show up as the diarrhea, but the gas and cramps.

I stay away from the sugar free candy (except the hard candies) most of them have lacticol (sp?) as the sweetener and they even say on most packages over consumption may have a laxative effect. I don't know what they consider over-consumption but I only ate what it said for a serving and it was not good, my stomach was in knots. And I do not even have IBS. I also don't think they are really allowed on SBD because they are still very high in fat.

Hi, Kimmie - I don't have IBS, but I can't imagine that the small quantity of artificial sweetener (aspartame or other) or sugar alcohols (splenda) you're getting in a piece would cause that much discomfort. Unless you're really eating a lot of it, and I doubt that's the case as well.

I hope you find the cause - no one should be so uncomfortable.

Take care!

Hi Kimmie,

I doubt it would aggravate the constipation side of IBS, but it definitely could aggravate the diarhea side of it. The sugar alcohols (the names of these ingredients tend to end in -itol) have a laxative effect, and if you're sensitive to that, you may want to watch it. You might want to experiment with different brands, and/or quantities.

My IBS tends more toward the constipation side most of the time, so it's not a problem for me.

Good luck, and hugs,

Jill K.

You may have the sugar free candies and chocolates... just do it in moderation.

You already said you were going to cut them out, but I wanted to chime in. I tried the S-f chocolate a couple of days ago and ended up with very painful diarrhea for the rest of the day. Yuck! I'll be sticking to the hard candies and jello if I was a sweet treat in the future.

I didn't have any SF candy today, and the tummy feels MUCH better!

I did have some SF pudding; it doesn't seem to bother me.

Thanks all for your input.

Kimmie,

The sugar alcohols could definitely affect you. I don't believe products such as SF pudding have those ingredients, causing them to be less likely to affect you. Sugar Free hard candies--such as Sorbee and Estee brands--have been on the market for quite some time. There may be info available on the relationship of ingredients in these candies and IBS at their respective companies' websites?

Four days without sugar free peanut butter cups, and NO GI symptoms! Looks like I found the problem. At some point, I will try having just one and see if I tolerate it.
