Sneaky chicken & vegetable broths

I went shopping tonight.  One of my items was canned chicken or vegetable broth to make the Big-Batch Vegetable Soup (recipe below).  I read the labels.  Many of the national brands had ingredients in their broths I didn't want, such as carrots, various sugars, potato starch, and hydrogenated fat.

The best broth I found was Kroger's store-brand "fat free clear chicken broth".  It has 0g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0mg cholesterol, 0g carb, 0g sugars, 2g protien.

It pays to read the labels!   :)

Gotta second that one! We don't have Krogers out here (someone in Kentucky told me it was similar to Target, Wal-Mart, etc). We do have a brand called Healthy Valley that is additive free. It is often found in the natural foods sections, and I look for it. We also have a discount, odds and ends chain here called "Big Lots" (formerly MacFrugals). They sometimes carry good, additive free broths and other products. I'd rather buy things at Big Lots when they are available, anyway, bargain hunter that I am!

Hi Catherine, Kroger stores are prevalent all through the southeast, but I've never seen one that resembled a Target or Wal-Mart.

I love my Kroger too. They seem to have everything! And like gabeachgirl said, they have their own brand of almost everything. I can never tell a difference in the Kroger brand and the name brand, even in the cereals. I also shop with buggies, but I don't recall ever being carried to the store! I guess Fort Worth isn't far enough South for the carrying?

We have a lot of grocery chains, depending on where you are in California. Albertson's is statewide, but not in every locale. Raley's, Nob Hill, and Bel Air are all the same chain, but Raley's has more natural foods than Nob Hill. I've never actually seen a Bel Air market, but the three advertise together. Raley's and Nob Hill are Northern CA, so maybe Bel Air is Southern CA? Safeway is Northern CA, and a good selection of natural foods. It's Vons in Southern CA, and I loved shopping at Vons when I was down there. Ralph's, which started in Southern CA,
