NET Carbs -- info. & how to figure --

I tried to copy the information below, but the system wouldn't let me post it. Even though it is an Atkins link, the article has very good information about what net carbs are and the formula for how to figure them.

Net Carbs sound like the same thing as Effective Carbohydrate Content in The Protein Power Lifeplan. The authors have listed a number of foods and their ECC's in the book, but even better, is the companion, pocket size gram counter which has an extensive list of foods with their ECC's, Glycemic Index readings, etc. It should be useful with any carb restricted program.

I noticed in your post that your reference for how to count carbs comes from the atkins nutritionals web site. I've been really struggling with how to incorporate (if at all) packaged foods like atkins nutritionals into this woe. Specifically, Dr. Agaston suggests that whole foods prepared in a way that leaves them as un-processed as possible are better for us. That makes alot of sense. But at the same time, many of the recipies call for equal or splenda (or even sugar free jello) which is obviously a chemically packaged material, where necessary, to satisfy sweet cravings. These two things seem opposed. So my takeaway has been to try to eat whole foods and prepare them myself as much as possible, but to eat processed foods, within carb limits, when i really want to.

Thoughts? Anybody?

That is exactly what I've decided. I try to eat whole foods whenever I can...but this diet also has to be something I can do for the rest of my life. So, when I can't eat something whole, I just try to pick whatever is the best choice.

I don't buy the Atkins processed foods, and I use SteviaPlus (natural)

Hi Hope,

I do the same thing. I don't eat Jello because Nutrasweet gives me headaches, but I probably wouldn't even if it were made with Splenda because of all the artificial colors. I follow the plan 98% of the time, almost always choosing whole, unprocessed foods, but when I really want something good, I have an Atkins ice cream cup. This is definitely not a part of this WOE, since it is made with full cream, and is essentially super premium ice cream, but with Splenda instead of sugar. But I figure if I'm going to have something like that, better to not have the sugar. I do also put Splenda in my tea every day, too.

I use the same logic to eat real sweets occasionally. As I've posted previously, the cravings for such are definitely subsiding (good!), but they are still there sometimes. I do believe that this WOE is more based on self-control and healthy eating than particular formulas, which is the beauty of its simplicity. Whatever you're comfortable doing for sweets--as long as it doesn't significantly sabotage your goals--is the perfect SBD plan for you,
