Is this ok to eat?
| Sat, 11-08-2003 - 10:54am |
I'm sorry if I've posted in the wrong spot but not sure where to ask this question. here goes anyways--- i purchased a Low Fat Black Bean Soup from my local grocery store before I started SBD and now I'm wondering if I can eat it on phase 1. A 1 cup serving has
143 cals
6.1g protein
2.1g total fat
25g carbs --AHH!! this is where I think that it's a No-No
2.7g sugars
8.8g fibre
it does have corn in it which I know phase one'ers are not allowed, but I thought I just pick them out.
Hopefully someone can assist me here.
Thanks,
Karen

Why don't you post the ingredients list? In this WOE, the ingredients are much more important than the individual calorie, carb, fat, or other counts.
water, black beans, tomatoes, corn, onions, canola oil, salt, garlic(contains glucose-fructose) jalapeno peppers, (contain high maltose corn syrup solids, salt) spices, dehydrated chipotle peppers
hope this gives a better look if it's ok.

Hi Karen, nearly all of the ingredients are good for Phase 1, with the exception of:
corn
glucose-fructose (those are sugars, and that's what we are striving to reduce dramatically in phase one)
high maltose corn syrup (maltose is said to be the worst sugar on the glycemic index, according to the book)
Watch out for ingredients ending in "-ose", which means sugars.

I agree with teflon_mom2 about the OK/not OK ingredients. I'd also say that if the parenthetical ingredients are meant to say that the garlic contains glucose-fructose and the jalapenos contain high maltose corn syrup, then there are less of the sugar ingredients than if they were listed as stand alone. Actually, I'm not positive about things sold in Canada, but I know that in the US, ingredients are listed in order from greatest to least, so that the first ingredient listed is the most plentiful and the last ingredient listed is the least plentiful. I'd save this soup for a day when you really don't have time to prepare something or until Phase 2, but again, it's up to you to decide.
