Im New! Its my 3rd day and I am having a hard time looking for zero sugar Ricotta or cottage cheese in the store. Does it really have to be 0 gm sugar? Most are low fat and reduced calorie but still has at least 1-2 gm of sugar in it. I read the sugarfree jello pudding but has also 8 gms of carbohydrates in it. How strict is phase 1?

I heard whipped cream is okay (is that true?)but I see 2 gm sugar in it too. Please help!!! Is there really a zero fat, zero sugar peanut butter or cheese out there? I found it difficult to eat snacks coz I dont know how strict phase 1 can be.....Kris

Hi I'm a newbie too. It's my first week and I am sugar crazy girl but I find that there are allowances that are good in this diet. You have the book? Have you gone to Part 2 the allowed and "to avoid" food guide for phase 1? It says you can use "I can't believe it's not Butter spray", so I use that. I also eat sugar-free Jello, not pudding. You can also use a sugar substitute like SPLENDA. I don't know about sugar free Peanut Butter but the book suggest "all-natural peanut butter" as being the best. You can find it in the health section. It is made with less or none of the refined sugar of the regular peanut butter. I don't know about the ricotta cheese. I know that the sugar content is important. The SBD is very strong about low-glycemic foods especially for phase one. This diet isn't like Atkins in where you have to be low-carbohydrate. This diet wants you to eat the "right" carbs. It also expresses that low fat often amounts to high sugar and high carb count. But it's okay to eat low-fat cheeses and diary because their sugar comes from Lactose which is lower on the glycemic index.

I hope this helps a little. The book is a little bit vague and takes some running over. I kinda wish it had a "Just do this" check list or something that was more organized. The ladies here are very helpful so just scan the discussion boards and I'm sure a lot of your questions will be answered. Good luck. We're here for you.

Greeting ladies,

I'll try to help as much as I can, but there are others who are far better versed than I.

1. Peanut butter - From my experience, my store doesn't have sugar free peanut butter. I get the All Natural Ground Right In the Store type. It's just peanuts and salt. Smuckers make a great all natural as well.

2. Ricotta and Cottage cheese, if I am not mistaken, have naturally accuring sugars in the form of lactose. Use a lower fat version of both (polly-o makes a great ricotta). I've seen people post about not liking eggs, and using cottage cheese as a breakfast as well.

3. On phase 1, the object is reduce and squash most if not all of the cravings and detox (some say it took a little longer than phase 1) you system. Dairy, expect specified on the "foods to enjoy" list are not allowed until phase 2. So, the sugar free pudding isn't allowed, but jello is the wiggly form is great!

4. There is a thread on this board under Recipies and another under general discussion giving all kids of snack ideas. Go to the search bar at the top of this page, and type in snacks. It will show you the threads... hopefully. Great snacks I have found are motzy sticks, jello, celery and peanut butter, 1oz cheese and pickles are great too.

If you stick to things, you'll do just fine. Take care.

Ria --- you are right --- a lot of foods have naturally occuring sugars that are okay.

If it is on the foods to eat list --- it is okay. It is impossible to have a diet that is virtually sugar free. What you want to stay away from is foods that have added sugar

that wreak havoc on your system.

Good luck

Thanks for all the reply. I was confused initially as why they allow ricotta cheese in P1 where there is at least 2-4 gms of sugar in it. Now I know that it is a natural sugar and not added sugar. You are right, it is hard to find a food that has zero sugar in it but I found some cheese sticks with 0 gm sugar in the grocery store and whole foods.

I knew I have read the foods to be avoided but again it was a good reminder that I cant have soymilk as well.....Kris
