I want to start the SBD, but have a question. Do you have to exercis? If so, what do you have to do, and how much? Also, do you have a lack of energy during this diet?

I don't think you have to exercise for any diet, but it's certainly beneficial to your health and will aid in your weight loss. If you do start an exercise program I would recommend a combination of weight lifting and cardio (walking, biking, stairclimber, etc). Your heart is a muscle and needs to be exercise just like any other muscle in your body. Also, Pilates is GREAT for toning and making your body leaner.

I did have lack of energy at first but that passes. I started to add in a couple of phase 2 foods earlier than most. It's cool because when I workout for a long time, I can feel the fat burners kick in since they pack more energy than carbs even though they are more readily available.

It's not NECESSARY but definitely helpful. If you're making a drastic change in lifestyle by this diet, I would get used to it first before beginning any exercise routine. Too much change at once may set you up for frustration and that won't be good. Take it slow and get the eating down first. If you're feeling good, start the exercise slowly too. Don't jump into everything at once.

I exercise 5 days a week with running and elliptical workouts. I try to do strength training too but not as much as I should

Good luck!

NO, You DO NOT have to excercise if....

You want to feel miserable & lethargic because it's been proven that excercising releases endorphines in your brain that boost your mood and makes you happier.

You want to be OBSESSED with this diet & have no other concerns. This will easily crush your self-esteem.

You want to let your physical health go to pot. You will be decreasing your circulation, metabolism & heartrate.

If you don't want to tone up.

This is just my opinion. I know there are people who HATE to excercise but please, I beg you, try to do some sort of physical activity for 20 minutes minimum every day. Even if it's just walking the dog. The benefits outweigh the risks, I promise you!

Some people do report feeling a lack of energy in the first week of this diet though but not all, everyone is different. Good Luck to you!

I agree --- you don't have to exercise but exercise is the BEST THING FOR YOU. A combination of strength training and aerobics is perfect.

I was unable to work out effectively during Phase 1 --- I just did what I could, once I got into Phase 2 --- it was full steam ahead.

welcome and good luck

Like the others said, you don't have to exercise to be on the South Beach Diet, but it helps to lose the weight when you add exercise.

Another thought...if you start lifting weights, even very light weights, you will start building muscle which also means you burn more fat. Like someone else said, it will increase your metabolism and although your weight *may* go up, don't let that scare you. Muscle takes up a LOT less space than fat so you are actually going to be thinner/leaner but your weight may be a little higher. I weigh more now than I did a few years ago but I am the same size in my clothes and actually a little smaller. It's because I started weight training in 1996.

Good luck.
