To share my story- I went on phase 1 of south beach to jump start my weight loss- I did lose 6lbs. in the 2 weeks. Then I went back to my regular relatively healthy diet habits. But to my surprise I gained 10 real pounds (not just water weight) in one month!!! Of note I have been unable to lose it quickly either. I am back to counting calories and I have lost 4 lbs. so far. But I am still at a net gain of 2 pounds!!!!!

I wondered if anyone else has had the same problem with the south beach diet. Or if my metabolism is just really weird?

hope this helps someone--shannon

well, shannon...I'm sorry you began to gain the weight back. The key phrase in your post was "Then I went back to my regular relatively healthy diet habits." South Beach isn't meant to be a diet, but a piece to incorporate into your lifelong health plan (along with exercise, regular doctor's visits, etc). You will gain the weight back if you go back to eating TOO many unhealthy carbs and unhealthy fats. This isn't supposed to be a quick fix or a jump start. I haven't had that problem because I have kept the principles of South Beach and Atkins in mind throughout my weight loss. I plan on sticking with this because I'm now at a higher risk for developing type two diabetes later on in life.

I hope you find what you are looking for. Thanks for seeking us out, but are you wanting to try south beach again or only trying to give us a warning? I'm pretty sure most of us aren't using this as a short term weight loss tool.

Here's to getting rid of those lost but gained pounds:)!!!

Hi,

I have a question: what is your definition of "relatively healthy eating habits". I think that could help in figuring out the "problem".

Also, I think you have to keep each diet separate. If you choose to count calories, count calories. If you choose to cut fat, cut fat. I happen to think that this SBD is a way of life and not a diet. Of course, in the specific phases you are more restrictive, but in the long run, at least to me, this is how I will eat for the rest of my life.

Hi Shannon,

I would have to concur with Alison on this. Its important to really depict what "healthy" food is and HOW MUCH of it is being consumed to cause weight gain. I am certainly no expert, but if one is eating healthy and appropriate amounts, unless there is a medical problem, it doesn't seem weight gain is going to happen. Along with Alison, I also believe it is a lifestyle of balance. I am new to this site and this gig with only about 10-15lbs to loose but nothing is a quick fix. This is an amazing support site and when we all look at the reasons we are eating and why and how much...it helps us reach our goal.

Good luck in your pursuit.
