Sorry, I just have so many questions on this diet! Anyone know legal "chinese food" to eat? I am having dinner at a friend's house tonight, and they decided to order chinese out. I don't want to be difficult... but I need to know a couple of dishes that I can eat safely! HELP!?!? Also, thanks to everyone answering my question's. You guys are so helpful, this is a great support system!

I would watch out for teriyaki dishes or sweet sauces because obviously of the sugar. Dishes with LOTS of veggies. Make sure they don't use MSG because it's made with beet sugar. I had the advantage (if you want to call it that) of seeing the blood sugar numbers when I was a gestational diabetic and still take it from time to time. I eat things like kung pao beef and mongolian beef and have not adverse effects to my blood sugar. I don't eat the rice and if i do, it's such a small amount (im way into phase 2).

If you go to www.southbeachdiet.com and do the free profile, there's a box for chinese food. They'll give you ideas on what to look for with that kind of food.

Have fun!

Thanks Alison,

I really appreciate it. I won't touch the rice, it's the dumplings and the pancakes that will be tough to resist, but I am certain I can do it. I love Kung Pao Beef, so I can get that. Yummy and spicy. Definitely veggies too. I will look on the website....

JMO....

I'm not a super-spicy food eater, so you won't see foods like General Gau's chicken on my list. And I'm assuming that you're talking about the more typical Americanized Chinese food. Of those, I'd assume safe things for SBD would be chicken wings, pork strips, most any of the veggie offerings (careful of the carrots), egg foo yung, main dishes with light-color sauces (moo goo gai pan comes to mind), probably most of the fish offerings unless there's breading involved. If there's something that catches your eye, ask how it's prepared. If your friends order something you might want to try, try a little to see if it's sweet before you put a quantity on your plate. Choose as wisely as you can.

I think obvious items to avoid include anything noodle-based, fried rice or steamed rice, the wrappers of spring rolls or egg rolls (I just eat the filling), chicken fingers and fried shrimp (unless you take the breading off), any of the teryakis for hidden sugar (a bunch of Chinese restaurants up this way include them on their menus, even though they're not Chinese), items that you know have sweet flavors, items with thick/dark sauces, crab rangoon (unless you don't eat the wrapper), wontons or wonton soup.

Come to think of it, I haven't had Chinese food since starting SBD. I'm glad you gave me the opportunity to think about it before I had to face a menu.

Good luck and happy eating!

JMHO, but chicken wings aren't on the SBD plan.

What about hot and sour soup?? Do you think this would be ok?

Here's an answer on restaurants from our FAQ thread.

OOPS! Sorry 'bout that. Then the chicken fingers would be good, stripped of their breading of course.

How much meat is on a chicken wing, anyway? I can't resist at least one, but I can stop there, too....

I never eat it - don't like the sour part; if there are noodles in there, eat around them and just go for the veggies and little bits of meat.

Having soup before your main course(s) might be a good way for you to take the edge off your hunger and curb any possible straying into the foods to avoid. Just a thought...

Wings are white meat right?

They are fine to eat...There's nothing magical about the breast except that it's white meat.

Wings are not considered white meat.
