I desparately need some advice -- I'm just finishing up week 3 (stayed on phase 1) and have only lost 4 lbs, all in the first week. Worst part is I haven't cheated -- really!! Not a crouton or a smidge of chocolate if you can believe it -- I've even surprised myself. If I had slipped at all I wouldn't be so upset. I couldn't believe that there was no change when I got on the scale today. And believe me, I have plenty to lose! There is diabetes in my family, I have high blood pressure and polycystic ovaries, so should be a prime candidate for this diet. Has anyone else experienced this frustration? Trying to decide if I should stick to p1 or move on to p2 and hope for the best. Thanks in advance for all your suggestions! I've never posted to a board before and am just amazed at all the support here. Not sure if I would have lasted this long!

thanks

Hi Geri:

I feel your frustration! I lost five pounds in Phase One, all in the first week like you. I stayed with it the second week, and didn't lose anything. I cheated a teeny bit, but not much. I went on to Phase 2 this week because I didn't want Thanksgiving to be a great big carb and sugar shock to my system and I wanted time to adjust. I lost roughly a pound this week, which isn't much but is more than I lost on my second week of Phase 1!

I'm planning to go back to Phase 1 for a week after Thanksgiving. My reasoning is that a) if I only lose in the first week of that phase, why frustrate myself with a second week? and b) while the slow weight loss in Phase 2 is great because it's still loss, I think I'll need the boost of quick weight loss to keep me motivated. I'm going to keep doing the back and forth, and spend longer periods in Phase 2 to give my body time to adjust to and maintain the weight loss in between the Phase 1 drops.

Also, I really believe that my body chemistry and metabolism has changed through Phase 1. I've tried to cheat a couple of times, but things with lots of sugar or processing just don't taste as good to me anymore. Maybe you and I have a body type that adjusts very quickly to the Phase 1 cleansing, and that's why all of our results are quicker (which is probably also why they're less than some others who are adjusting gradually).

So please don't give up on the plan, just make some adjustments to find out what works best for your body. That's the beauty of the Beach, you can totally personalize it!

Take care,

Shan

Thanks Shan -- I appreciate your "words of wisdom" :-). I haven't had any sugar yet but not sure if I'll be able to resist some sweets on Turkey Day! I did "test" myself today and had a small slice of rye bread w. lf cheddar cheese for a snack and didn't notice any unusual reaction. Tomorrow I may treat myself and have a sf yogurt (sad that is now a treat!). I will take your advice and go back to strict p1 after the holiday. Just out of curiousity, how much do you want to lose? I need to go down about 30 lbs :-(.

I stayed on Phase 1 the recommended 2 weeks. At one point during the second week and during the first week of P2 (yes, I was an S2--Slave to the Scale--for most of the dieting portion), I noticed I was no longer losing any weight. It was discouraging; I started to cheat a little after a while on P2. BUT, eventually,

Geri, here is that link to an incredibly helpful thread about this:

Also, on a personal note....on Day 15 on the SBD, I started having this whole "extra period" at the wrong time.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I know everyones body reacts differently, but I guess I was just dreaming that this diet was going to be "the miracle" for me :-). I will keep it up thanks to everyones support and encouragement, but will not be able to resist a glass of red wine at dinner tonight!

Hi Geri:

I haven't decided on my final goal yet, but my total weight loss will be between 40-50 pounds (ooooh, that looks scary!) Forty will bring me close to the low end of the healthy weight for my height, and 50 will put me at the lowest end of that range. Before anyone gets upset about that, I should say that my frame is borderline small/medium and I was close to that weight less than ten years ago and maintained it healthily. I gained weight through falling into bad eating habits and slacking off my old training routine. I'm not sure that I want to commit to the full 50 yet simply because I'm not sure if that situation has changed. I want to be at the ideal weight for me, not something unreal that will be terribly difficult to maintain!

Sounds like we're both in the same range Shan. Those #'s do look scary -- I haven't been my "goal" weight since high school, but may as well dream big, right?? BTW I went out w. a bunch of friends last night to an Italian restaurant and DID NOT have a single piece of bread or any pasta w. my meal (couldn't resist the red wine though). Hope this starts paying off soon...

Congrats on your will power against pasta and breads! Clappy

After 3 weeks on Phase 1, the wine was probably no big deal (and I bet it tasted great!).

My goal ended up being my high school weight, as well. I was soooo happy when I made it...didn't think it was reasonable to even expect such, but that was the outcome for me.

Stay happy and healthy...will you be moving into Phase 2 now, or staying on Phase 1 for one more week?
