Hi,

I was all excitied about starting the SBD but I went on the WW chat room and they bashed the diet. They said it is like atkins and people quit after a month. I was so besides myself. Now, I am doubting whether I should start this diet or not. Please give input.

Thanks in advance.

I was on Atkins and believe me this is not like Atkins. I was on this diet for almost 3 months until the last 2 weeks when I lazily fell back to my old habits, but I'm back now for good. You shouldn't let other people's ignorance about a diet affect your decision to eat that way or not. Get the facts and decide if it is right for you. There are critics of every diet and every diet is not right for every one of us. You decide how you want to eat! Good luck!

It's amazing how many uninformed people have an opinion. I'd venture most of the critics have never read the book or know what the diet actually consists of. They've heard someone say it's like Atkins who got it from someone else and so on and so on... Not to mention, at a WW site, they're going to be pushing WW and want as many people to go that route as possible. Learn about SBD, give it a try, and see for yourself.

Hi Aspenice:

There are some posters on other boards here in IVillage that will trash any diet that isn't their own, sadly. The South Beach = Atkins argument is one of their favorites. I haven't read the Atkins book, so I don't get into the comparison between the two because I simply don't know enough to back up anything I would say :-) There are several people on this board who have read or have tried Atkins who can help you out with that.

As for South Beach itself, it's not true that people quit after a month. I've been on for two months now with no thoughts or desire to quit. There are many people here who have been on much longer than that. There are some people who quit, of course, but I don't think our percentage is any higher than any other group: people drop out of dieting for all sorts of reasons. This is a very supportive group when you're having success, and a very supportive group when you need some help. If you're not sure you want to try South Beach yet, it's OK. It isn't for everyone, any more than Weight Watchers or any of the other diets are. I would encourage you to stick around for awhile and take a look through the discussions. Join in if you feel like it, and get to know us all.

Good luck!

Keep in mind different things work for different people. My idea of eating is not assigning it points, counting calories, fat grams, or carb grams...that is just me though. I'm wouldn't say anything bad about the diet itself because it's been so successful for so many people. You've got to do the research and choose what will fit your lifestyle the best.

Its really too bad that there are some who want to bash this diet. I think you have to do what works for you and this happens to work for me. It is a really healthy way of eating. I like that fact I don't have cravings therefore it has not been a chore to stay on this plan. I have been on it since August and absolutely love it! I have tried Weight Watchers and all the others, but this by far works for me. You really have to think this is not a diet but a way of living. This is a great place to get answers and support and just sound off.

Take Care,

Don't let them decide for you. My personal experience: I stuck with WW for six months, journaled like a fool, killed myself with workouts, and at the end had lost and regained the same 6 lbs twice. It cost me two seasons passes ($350) and some food items of barely passable taste. WW works for some people, not for all. I know many people who are having success with WW, but I also notice that they have struggled with making the right food choices when everything is available to them. Some of us need that strict Phase I and the easing back into carbs that comes with Phase II. If any of the WW people are speaking from experience, then take their comments in good measure, but if most of them are clueless about SBD (as I suspect they are), let it roll. You have nothing to lose on SBD except weight and about $20 for the book or a monthly on-line subscription charge; WW for me was a waste of time and money. As for SBD being an Atkins knock-off - NOT! SBD emphasizes and educates you to make the smart food choice - lean meats (not a regular consumption of bacon and burgers), low-glycemic-index/low-carb foods (not severely restricted carbs for an extended length of time), and other wise nutritional advice.

Just my loud and cranky 2 cents' worth...
