Is meat and fresh veggies expensive where you are?  Ground beef is over $5 per pound and that's the 85% fat free.  Cauliflower is $2.99 a head, broccoli is $2.99 per pound and iceberg lettuce is $1.99 a head!  YIKES!  I just hate it when stores rip you off like that, they know everyone has to eat and most people like to eat healthy but why?

I'm amazed at the prices you quote. I thought my regular grocery store (Stop and Shop, in New England) was expensive, but $2.99 for a lb of broccoli - YIKES! I can get broccoli crowns (with the stumpy stems already cut off - I don't eat them anyway, 'cuz they never cook enough) for $1.99 max, and a head of cauliflower for a whole lot less. I haven't bought ground beef in a while (what's in my freezer may well be freezer-burned by now), but $5 is outrageous. Are those the regular prices? I wonder if the prices have escalated because the holiday season is here; that happens sometimes.

With your bigger family (well, bigger than mine, anyway), have you tried Costco and such for meats, produce, and paper and cleaning products? Costco carries a line of frozen veggies that is fabulous - TropicLand, 5-lb bags of broccoli florets, green bean, and peas. I think the price is around $7 per bag. I love using Costco for these types of items because I don't have to do a "big shop" at the supermarket too often and can get in and out quickly (and maybe that's why I'm stunned at the prices you noted - I haven't really paid attention to those items). The $35 membership at Costco is worth it.

Besides, Costco carries Gloria Vanderbilt jeans for cheapcheapcheap, and I love those !

Meat has defintely gone up because of the mad cow scare. People were afraid to buy from canadian farmers and had to use american cows unnecessarily. At least that's what I got from an MSN article. That's one of a couple of reasons. I'll see if I can find it.

I know restaurants are even increasing their prices.

Here's two articles addressing the dramatice rise in beef. A beef tenderloin already cut used to run us 7-8 dollars a pounds. Now, for the whole dang tenderloin (which should be cheaper since it's not cut) it's 13 dollars a pound! I was so shocked. I love cow!!! Always have:)

Donna (I shop New England Stop & Shop too, or Big Y)... you need to cut the stumps off, then trim the green edges all around so you are left with the center (the broccoli heart).

Could it be the supply and demand thing too?
