Ok, so I've been on the diet for 8 days now and the last 2 days my urine is VERY strong smelling, is that normal?  I drink on average 6 glass of water a day (I know it should be more but I'm trying).  So why now is it so strong?  Am I finally loosing the water weight my TOM was saving?

Have you been taking a vitamin B complex or eating foods with lost of this? If so this complex will turn your urine dark yellow... not to worry because mostly this yellow color is due mostly to an increased output in uric acid.

However, if your urine is reddish-brown in color I would do the following: check your diet to see if you are eating alot of blackberries or beets (anything with tons of dark pigment)... stop eating them for a few days and see if it turns back to normal. If this is not the case, then contact your doctor about a urine hematocrit analysis (blood in the urine) which can be caused by a number of problems. Also, if the urine is cloudy or smells like acetone (nail polish remover) or sugar then I would also contact your doctor.

Most likely your urine is just yellow which is just a sign of a change in diet and is not unhealthy at all... so keep at it and good luck! (let me know if you have more questions about this)

Yes I'm new here... I am on my 2nd week on the SBD and doing great. I am doing my PhD research in Diabetes complications... I work in a lab that measures these things called AGEs (advanced glycation endproducts), accumulation of which have been shown to contribute to diabetic complications. So you can imagine how interested I was in a diet that could prevent onset of adult diabetes. So in the lab I work with anything from urine and blood plasma to liver and brains (yuck!)... but I wouldn't trade in my job for all the money in the world. I am currently working on a few things, including ascorbate (vit C) homeostasis in diabetes and a non-invasive way to measure risk of developing diabetes in patients. So any metabolism questions at all... I can usually help (or look up in my stack of reference materials at work).
