Ok, so I've been on the diet for 8 days now and the last 2 days my urine is VERY strong smelling, is that normal?  I drink on average 6 glass of water a day (I know it should be more but I'm trying).  So why now is it so strong?  Am I finally loosing the water weight my TOM was saving?

Thanks... I hope I can be helpfull too! I will try and check the board as often as I can and answer questions... and ask a few myself :). If you don't hear from me then it is most likely because sometimes I work from 9am to 3am, but such is the nature of the trade. With the holidays steadily approaching I am trying to prepare myself for the annual family feast (now I have 2 to go to), and in doing so this board will certainly help. Plus it is beneficial to my work as if I read a metabolic question I don't know, I go and look it up out of interest. So good luck to you all... and also to myself! ;)

So, ElsbethKd, why does asparagus make pee stinky? It's not exactly the metabolic question I know you were looking forward to, but I figured perhaps you'd know!

Teehee...

Tell me ladies, honestly, who else could you discuss the color and odor of your pee with like this?

Asparagus contains a sulfur compound called mercaptan (a sulfer-containing compound also found in rotten eggs, onions, garlic, and in the secretions of skunks). When your digestive tract breaks down this substance, by-products are released that cause the funny scent. Not to mention that it is rich in folic acid (a B vitamin), which acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in DNA and RNA biosynthesis. Through the metabolism of folic acid the amino acid methionine is created, which also has a sulfer group... so you may see how it could build up and spill out into the urine.

Sorry it took a while for me to respond but a friend picked me up from work and we did some holiday shopping. Hope this helps!
