Holiday Parties??

With the holidays around the corner, I was wondering which is a better choice for a beverage (alcoholic). The low carb beer or wine? Not planning to go way off balance but would like to know what would be the best choice in these circumstances.

Thanks for the info!

Hi there,

I'm not much of a drinker, but from the book and others on here, I can tell you that even the low-carb beers have maltose, which is a sugar, in them.

Dr. A says of any alcoholic drink, red wine would be the best because even though it, too, will convert to sugar, it is offset by the heart benefits to it. A glass or two during Phase 2 should be fine.

If I'm wrong about any of this info, someone please correct me!!

Thanks Cyndie! That's what I thought. I would mostly have wine if it were the case. Just wanted to get other's opinions first.

The reasaon that red wine is the best alcoholic drink is that it is extremely high in antioxidants, which although some think is not important for your health, they really are. Your body makes a lot of what are called reactive oxygen species (ROS) through metabolism, injested pollution, and many many other biochemical processes. These ROS can then react with proteins in your body, causing harmful modifications that make it impossible for your body to get rid of, thus they just accumulate over time. It has been shown that accumulation of irreversibly modified proteins can lead so such age-related diseases as cataracs, athlerosclerosis, and even obesity. What antioxidants do is they react with ROS before they can cause harm in your body. For example, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) will react with 2 ROS and form 2 non-reactive oxygen species and dehydroascorbic acid (DHA). DHA is then shuttled into the cells and enzymatically converted back into ascorbic acid to be released and start the process all over again. There is much evidence in the biochemical world to this effect, and if you would like me to reccomend some papers I'd be happy to.

But the point of the story (sorry so long) is that red wine is very good for your health... the antioxidant benefits you receive from it really outweigh the alcohol you injest. So have a few glasses and have a great time at the parties!

Very informative thanks so much. Puts my mind at ease. Don't want to blow it. And it has great benefits.

Cheers!

Just agreeing with the others, and also letting you know that there is a post on this in our FAQ.

I'd pick a dry red wine for its other publicized health benefits; if you can't drink red wine because it gives you headaches, go to a dry white (Pinot Grigio is really light and dry; there are a lot of bad ones out there, though). Beer might be made from grains, but there's not much else to recommend it (except that it tastes so good!).

Thanks sista! I usually drink White Zinfidel. I think that's how you spell it. How's that rate?

I would saty away from the Zinfandels as they don't have the high antioxidant capacity that reds do so you are just consuming alcohol and sugar. Your best bet is a good dry red (dry uses less sugar to make).

I personally hate dry red wine, but I love a soft sweet wine. I figure it's still a whole lot better than a margarita which used to be my drink of choice.
