OT: Very fat kids :(

I'm home sick today. I rarely get to see daytime TV, but I'm watching Maury Povitch right now. The name of the show is "Help! My 218 lb. 5-year-old needs to lose weight!" At the moment, there is a 70-lb. 2 year old baby on. The baby eats more food by 1:00 than I eat all day; but it's all junk. There's a 1-year-old infant pigging out on fries and already weighs almost 40 lbs.
What do you all think of this? Why do these people have all of that junk in their house, and why are they letting their children eat like this? Many of the parents are only mildly overweight, but these kids are very obese.

A 70 pound 2-year-old?! My 9-year-old brother wrestles at 56 pounds and is ALWAYS a couple of pounds under at weigh-in. These poor kids!

I don't get it , her mother is VERY obesse I'd say 5'2 and 350 pounds and all they feed that child is Chef Boyarde, corn dogs and bologna . I remember last year at Thanksgiving her parents were laughing how they had to buy a can of black olives JUST for their daughter .
<<< QUESTION: On the SBD olives are allright though ?>>>
I remember being in my local doctors office , probally about 6 years ago and, I don't know if you remember the first baby that Maury profiled , back 6 years ago ( can't remember the baby boys name ) and he was in there with his parents , the father looked thin and the mother was slightly overweight , but the baby who was like 18 months or so was like 100 pounds . He was about as wide as he was tall. Anyway his mother was telling me that she couldn't put him in a car seat because he was so big. This actually happened about 2 months before he was on the Povich show ...
... anyway its very sad that parents don't try to help their children more ...once they hit school age , they are going to get teased , and made fun of and even if the children loose the weight on their own , they wil forever be known as the "fat kid in Kindergarten"
This is a bit off topic but a mother in North Carolina , I think, was actually convicted of being an accessary to her sons suicide , because she never washed his clothes , provided deoderant or dental care , basically her son smelt like a trash can . So he committed suicide because he couldn't handle being made fun of anymore . So the mother was held accountable .
At least these parents seem like they are TRYING to get their children help ...but I still feel that they could do more to control what goes into their childrens mouths , with out turning to Dr. Phil or whoever for help . Its very sad.
Just my 2 cents

Oh I agree!

QUESTION: On the SBD olives are allright though ?
Hi Jen, yes, both black and green olives are fine on the SBD including Phase 1.

Unfortunately, I see so many kids that don't have a safe place to play. Where are these children going to learn the value of exercise?
Also, does anyone read Fitness magazine? There is a nonprofit organization that is working to help encourage families with overweight children to exercise and eat better. They profile the family each month. I love it because they target not just the child but the entire family. I wish everyone would jump on the bandwagon.
This topic is definitely disturbing. What I haven't seen addressed here is the emotional eating kids do. I know I did it. I think education about nutrition and exercise are well and good, but some of these kids are eating their anger, boredom, rejection, disappointment, etc. It's a vicious cycle. They need to get the root of the problem to stop the overeating. I mean, adults do the same thing, right? I'd like to see something done about that ;).
Just MHO,
Susan
