New to SBD & board, have some questions!

I have only heard a little about the South Beach Diet and to be honest I thought (from the name of it) that it would be one of those eat a sprig of lettuce and a teaspoon of veggies and drink some 48 hour hollywood miricle diet drink... But I was very very surprised today when I logged on to ivillage and found the correct info on SBD. I am overweight and need to do something about it. I know I am putting myself in danger of a many number of health problems, and I have a loving husband and two beautiful boys to think about, I can't keep being tired and sleepy, unmotivated and sick all the time. I tried the atkins diet and made myself sick, on most days I only got about 4-7g of carbs and I couldn't take it. From what I have read this sounds a lot more liveable, which is what I need. My questions are:
Is this diet easily doable on a low income?
Do I need to buy a book or subscribe to the SBD website for twenty something buck to have this diet work, or can I find most of the info on the web? (money issues)
Will this diet be easy to sneak in on my family? My husband needs to lose some weight (health reasons) but I don't want to make him feel like I think he's overweight, I would just like to make some changes to his eating habits.
How much ecersise should I be getting? I have a membership to curves, but I haven't went in about 2 months, I know I need to but we all had the flu! yuck...
I need to lose about 60 pounds (I am 185 now and would like to get to about 125-130) about how long would this take if I stuck with it?

Thanks for everything, I am really excited about this.

Hi Jedi,
Welcome to the Beach!
Hi Jedi, welcome!

Hello jedi_mommyto2boys, welcome to the SBD board!
The other girls have given you great answers, so I just wanted to say that I DO recommend buying the book, because some of these things (especially in phase 2) can get complicated. I just think that reading the book and understanding why all the foods are on the eat or not to eat list is very helpful to me when trying to choose right foods.
Are you a Star Wars fan? My husband and I are fans, but we tend to lean towards the dark side of the force. :-)
Michelle
I can't wait to start (I would say try, but when ever I try something I fail, so start sounds better, ya know), Thanks again for everything.
Jedi
P.S.
Michelle
My husband and I both love it, he is more of an encyclapidia on Star Wars. And the darkside is always funner!

I must agree with all the other replies, and add my 2 cents about the cost issues. I'm also a college student and mom to 2 boys. Not being a very good cook, I could probably tell you where it's "kids night" around here on any given night. Since coming to the beach on 12/1 I have worked hard to learn some simple SBD-friendly cooking, and we eat at home much more often. The savings have more than offset the increase in grocery bills, and that's just from avoiding meals like pizza delivery, McDonalds and Chic-Fil-A! Check out the recipes section for lots of great ideas.
I just saw the book at Costco for about $15, and I recommend it. It does a great job of explaining how our bodies process what we eat, and how we can affect that process. There are recipes as well, and lots of answers to FAQ's. You can find those here too, but I prefer to have it all in one place without having to log on.
However you choose, just do it! Don't let not having the book hold you back! You'll be so motivated once you start losing!!
