Any diabetics using SB?

Today was day one for me. I started researching SB a few months ago, then my book made the rounds in the office, and now I have it back. I was diagnosed w/ Type II diabetes a few months ago, and SB makes so much sense for me. I'm anxious to see how it affects my blood glucose numbers.

I'm looking forward to participating on this board. The Diabetes board, Unschoolers board and Homeschoolers board have all been fantastic - and from looking over the posts here, it looks like another group of positive-thinking, supportive women!

Cheers!

Diane~

Welcome to the beach! I bet you've had quite a lifestyle change since your diagnosis. I applaud your dedication and research...and feel you've found the best dietary means of controlling your glucose. (You didn't mention if you're insulin-dependent or managing with dietary measures, or how often you check the glucose levels) Either way, you should see a fabulous improvement with this WOE, stabilizing your glucose will make you feel so much better! Check your glucose often, especially in the beginning until you notice reliable patterns. Make sure your MD knows you're starting SBD, and keep him/her informed. If you're on insulin, your dose may need to be lowered.

And keep us informed, too! Let us know how SBD affects not only your weight, but overall health and blood chemistry. Best of luck!

Hi Debbie!

I'm on oral meds right now, not insulin, and the docs feel that with diet and exercise, I may eventually be able to go off the oral meds. My endocrynologist thinks SB is a great option for diabetics.

I normally check my BG 4x a day, but with the holiday insanity, I've gotten off track. Now that things have calmed down again, I'll be more organized.

Can hardly believe I've lost 6 lbs in 4 days! I feel great - had a bad headache last night, but that could have been from any number of things, but I do kind of think it was a sugar withdrawl issue.

My sister brought home baklava - one of my favorites, and it was SCREAMING to me yesterday, but I want a new sidesaddle habit more than I want a piece of baklava. Guess the priorities are finally in order. Or the right incentives, anyway!

Happy New Year,

Diane

Hi Diane,

My name is Kimber and I was diagnosed with Type II in early 2003. I started trying the Atkins low carb and failed miserably. I tried it several times then I learned about the SBD. I did lots of research, printed out materials and took it to my doc. He checked it over and called me the next day. I am on Glucophage so he said try Phase I for three days and monitor my sugar closely. On the 2nd and 3rd day, my sugers were 61 and 52. He then said go to Phase II. He said they were too low and I needed the good carbs. Now, my sugars stay in the 80's for the most part. He still wants me to take the Glucophage so I do. I have lost 16lbs since Thanksgiving! Make sure you talk with your doctor. Your sugars could get too low. My doctor said anyone with diabetes should just start on Phase II but that was HIS opinion. Always check with yours :0)

I am a diabetic on 4 needles a day since feb 2001 and this is the first time that my sugar are constantly below 7x18=126. I lost 15 lbs since oct 25 and have maintained this loss through the month of Dec. I am restarting to detox my body and mind jan 4 to continue to loss the rest of my weight. to go from my start weight of 213 to go to 198/188/178/168/158/148. All diabetic Doctors should be recommending this lifestlye change to the diabetics. I do not like the CARB HANGOVERS LOL

Kimber,

Congratulations on 16 pounds SINCE Thanksgiving! Way to go, girl! Do you realize that most people will GAIN that much weight during the holidays and you not only didn't GAIN - you lost! Good for you!

I am type II diabetic as well and on glucophage and Actos. My doctor recommended SBD after I had tried several others (including liquid - UGH!) and just couldn't do it. I have only been on it a week....but I feel better already....and my blood sugar levels are not "spiking" like they usually do.

Thanks so much for the support and information you all provide! GREAT for us newbies!

Kimber - I did notice my sugars were getting pretty low. Still within range, but I was feeling pretty crappy. I've started moving towards phase 2, instead of doing phase 1 for the 2 full weeks and feel much better already, and my BG has remained in range. Thanks for the tip!
