first day disappointment

Today is my first day on the SBD. I ate two mini-quiches for breakfast (yum). For lunch, I thought I would make a lettuce-wrap. I put in 2 slices of fat-free deli meat, fat free cheese, cucumber slices, and alfalfa sprouts. I put in a little hummus to stick it all together. Sounds good, right? Well, the fat-free cheese turned to some sort of liquidy mess, the hummus made the lettuce soggy and also the cucumbers. When I took it out to eat it, it was so gross I had to throw it out.

So now I'm eating my cottage cheese snack and jello snack for lunch. So far things are not going well. This will be difficult to stick with this for 2 weeks when I don't even like the food on day 1. Still hanging in though...

Hi Angela~

Sorry to hear your lunch wasn't edible! Sounds like it would have been great when it was freshly made...have you thought of having that for breakfast and bringing the quiche for lunch? I make the quiche in a 8x8" glass dish, and cut it into squares. It's a bit easier that way, and I've also learned (from the ladies on this board) to add lots of other veggies like broccoli, muchrooms, and zucchini. That cuts the strong spinach taste.

It might help to assemble the wrap just before eating it. More individual prep and carrying to work, but better flavor.

Today for lunch I had tuna salad (with hard-boiled eggs, celery, mustard, S&P and a bit of FF mayo) with about a cup of grape tomatoes (halved with S&P) and a glass of V8 (ugh!) chased with water ;-) My boys surprisingly had a version of the same, with TownHouse Wheat crackers, minus the V8...there's progress!

Don't give up! It might be good to stock some nuts or peanut butter at work, as well as some extra cheese or celery sticks just in case lunch doesn't work out as planned. (At least until you find more trusty favorites!)

Good Luck! Hope this helps!

Oh you poor thing. What a disappointment. But don't give up. Yes, you may need to experiment for a few days to find foods you like and are on the list. I have had to do the same thing. Just so you will know you are not alone, I'll tell you about my failure. I made zucchini pancakes with zucchini, egg supstitute and herbs. Usually they fry up very nice. But yesterday they where too wet and soft and would not fry up like pancakes until I actually put in a bit of low fat Bisquick. I felt like it was cheating but I could not stand to waste the zucchini. AND I HAVE BEEN DIETING FOR ALMOST 4 YEARS. So I with all my experience at eating right, if I can fail, then it can happen to anyone.

However, I did not give up even when food tasted yukky. I kept trying to find foods I like. I like mixing canned artichokes with low fat cheese and olive oil mayo for a dip. But I eat it like a caserole. I put in other allowed stuff like chopped water chestnuts and green onions. Sometimes it turns out great and sometimes it needs a little fixing.

I've lost over 90 pounds by trying different diets and this one is my favorite.

Don't give up. You will find things to eat that you like.

Good ideas!

Also, regular deli ham (not coated with brown sugar or honey) is lowfat to begin with. If you were to get some Baked Virginia or Black Forest Ham you could eat ham without sacrificing taste and texture. Regular mozzarella is made with skim milk (usually) and does not crumble like many low fat cheeses. Your wrap sounds good. What I would have done instead would be to wrap the meat and lettuce separately, then put some hummus in a tupperware and spread it last minute. But mayo and mustard are not off limits. You can make yourself a ham sandwich without the bread. This too is yummy!

Your lunch sounds disatisfying but do not give up. If you get hungry later, do you have access to nuts. They are filling and a great snack. These first few days are tough, but once you get the hang of it you'll come up with great and creative ideas. Then, once you get through the first two weeks the rest will seem like such a breeze!!!!

Other great lunch ideas. Tuna made ahead of time is a great idea. Wrap it in lettuce for lunch or a snack. Peanut butter on celery is a great snack. As are sugar free Jellos. I tend to grill a super duper amount of chicken during Phase 1... makes great meals and a great snack. You will find that if you eat a lot of low fat protein you will not be hungry.

I like to package up lots of things. I like to eat a lot of mini meals instead of three large meals. Pistachios are a great snack. An interactive way of eating since you have to work at getting your food out! I like to have pieces of veggies, like steamed brocoli or sliced red peppers and salad dressing. Let's see what else... I like the Cup of Soups, just watch the salt intake and get them without the noodles. I like to drink a lot of tea and have a diet soda in the afternoon.

You can do this. Do not give up!!!!

Oh that sucks! There is nothing worse than looking forward to your lunch at work and it doesn't take good or you have to throw it out. That is great though that you still stuck to the plan!

Is there a McDonald's near you? I am on Day one of Phase I but didn't get out to the brocery store yesterday due to torrential rain/flooding. Well, today I am staying in all day waiting for a call about a job, so I can't go get groceries til this evening but I didn't have much here for lunch. I had eggs for bfast but for lunch I ran out quickly and got a bacon ranch chicken salad from McD's. I used my own low sugar dressing from home- it is yummy! Anyway, that is what I can have on days when I need to go shopping or am out and about. They are cheap too, and good for situations like yours.
