Hummus is made of sesame seed paste (pure fat) and chickpeas(boiled ground - veggie) so why do you consider it veggie only? it is one of my favourite dishes but I m afraid to include it in my diet kuz it is very rich in fat.

Do you have other view point for including it in the diet?? (pls say yes!!)

thnx

thnx for replying. Tahini is the sesame paste. I have seen it before. It looks like very thick oily dark-beige liquid. I know it is very high in fat (dunno whether saturated or not)

Another question:

Are we allowed to eat as much as we want of nonsaturated fats?? but then how do we lose weight if we obviously have stores of fat in our bodies?

Olive oil and canola oil are unlimited.

Tahini is like peanut butter except it's from sesame seeds instead of peanuts. No sugar peanut butter is allowed so why not hummus? Also, a recipe is listed in the book under Phase One foods so eat it up!!! (As an aside, it tastes GREAT with lamb... my husband is half lebanese and his family always eat it with lamb).

Just googled it for you...

Tahini

Diet Nutrition

Tahini is a spread made from sesame seeds. Tahini is a good source of essential fatty acids (EFAs). Tahini is a healthy alternative to butter and margarine on bread and toast.

Tahini has a strong, nutty flavour and can be used as a dip on its own or mixed with other dips. Tahini is mashed with chick peas, lemon juice and garlic to make hummus. It is used widely in the Middle East.

Because of it's high oil content, tahini is high in calories and should be eaten in moderation.

Just wanted to add that fats slow digestion, making you feel full longer and helping to keep your blood sugar stable... a good thing.

I make my own hummus without tahini and it is awesome!

In a blender, puree 1 can (drained and rinsed) chick peas, 2 to 3 TBS of olive oil, 1 or 2 cloves of crushed garlic and the juice of half a lemon (or more to taste). I add salt and pepper to taste and you have a healthy and low fat version! I love this spread on romaine lettuce leaves and spread on celery. In P2 I eat it on toasted whole wheat pita!
