Phase I not recommended for Athlete?!

I just read on the web that the Doctor who designed SBD does not recommend phase I for Athletes. I guess this answers my lack of energy and inability to get half my regular performance in the Gym. I m done with my 5th day of Phase I and will check my weight end of the week. However I am curious if anyone knows the breakdown of carbohydrates, protein, and fat in a typical Phase I day.

I know that an active adult needs about 55%- 65% carbohydrates in their daily diet, about 15%-20% protein, and 10%-15% fat.

I doubt this can ever be achieved through SBD phase I. so I guess the point is to have very little workout or none while on phase I. Since phase I is only two weeks that is not a problem for most people.

Hi,

I'm an ultra runner-I run distances longer than the 26.2 mile (marathon) range. I typically run 50-60 miles per week and I lift weights 2 times a week. I was still eating so many carbs that I couldn't lose the extra 10. While eating the SB way of life, I have been able to run long distance - did one 50 mile ultra, have a marathon this Saturday - and still lose, w/o "carbbing out". I am getting enough carbs from the 101 vegetables I am eating. We don't need all the sugar and white flours. They add extra weight and allow for those hard to give up cravings. I'm a choc-o-holic. This way of eating has curbed the cravings. I love it.

Last night I did a speed session of 8 miles with my running club. I didn't run out of energy. Prior to the work out I consumed a 4 oz. chicken breast, 2 cups of faux mashed potatoes and a green salad. After the work out I had leftovers from the meal prior. I have more energy than before. I'm a true believer in this way of eating. It allows me to eat well, continue with my running and LOOSE the fat!!

Wow! You go girl!!

I've never gotten into running, but I love to walk. It sounds like you're one of those people who "gets it" and finds that mental place while running. It must be cool!

Keep up the good work, and have fun!

Thanks Debbie. Running began as a way to lose weight for me. I had 60 pounds to lose after son #2 was born. I was walking and lost 25, then stalled, and began running. Now it has become a way of life. It isn't true that athletes all eat well, all exercise the extra calories, etc. We have eating problems as well. Carbs and sugar are stored as fat. Plain and simple. We eat too many and we get fat. While I have now been eating more veggies (LOTS more) and more proteins, I have been able to lose weight and feel great. I still have a few pounds to lose, but even after I reach goal, I'm with the SB for the long haul. It is a healthy way of eating for all.

Yes, that's right. It seems like a lot, but with training, anyone can do it. First you beging by running for 1 minute and who knows where you will wind up at!

that's amazing to me. i started running last spring, and made it up to running for 45 minutes straight (for me, that is a lot, since i hate running). then my knees and hip started to hurt. i tried to keep running, since i'm only 24, and thought it was silly to feel like a grandma (no offense to grandma's, some are in much better shape than i am!!), but in the end it just hurt too much. so it's back to the elliptical...by the way, has anyone taken a spinning class? i know yoga and pilates are the "in" classes right now, along with others, but i like biking and was wondering if anyone had experience with that sort of exercise. it looks a little intense!

Julie,

WOW!!!!!!!!

ultras?????? I have been curious about doing more than just a half marathon, and I was looking into a marathon in Tampa, Florida. I am having knee "hurts," so I think I will lay off things for now. My favorite run is the River Run in jacksonville, Florida, and I don't want to train for both.

How did you get into running ultras? What is your training schedule like? I'm VERY interested!

TIA

Wow, thanks for the interest!

6 years ago I had 60 pounds to loose after my son, Troy, was born. I did WW and lost 25, began walking, lost some more and stalled so began to run. This is about the time Oprah was training for her first marathon. I thought, dang, if Oprah can run, Julie can run. I began to run 4 minutes, walk 4 minutes for 25 minute workout and worked my way up from there. After my first 7 mile run I told my husband I wanted to run Grandmas Marathon (Duluth, MN) he was scared! I did run Grandmas, ran Twin Cities Marathon the following Septemeber and have been running ever since. I really love it. It is "my" time. I bought a Border Collie who loves to run the trails with me. I found an beginning ultra running group onlline 2 years ago. I then began to train for my first Ultra. I ran my first Ultra - a 50K -(31.2 miles) in April of 2002. Then did Ice Age 50 Miler, in WI, that May, and have continued on. My longest distance was 93 miles at FANS in Mpls. last June. It was a 24 hour race around Lake Nakomis. This June my goal is 100 miles.

Training: I run 5-6 times a week; distances of 5-7 miles weekdays and longer 12-20 on weekends or alternating weekends, depending what I am training for.

I have a snow shoe marathon in Duluth MN this Saturday. I don't know how much snow is up there though...last year we ran in in our trail shoes.

Thanks!
